    Way to go Overton.

Now, this isn't going to sound like a compliment, but it is. I'm getting shades of Roger Salkeld from him. Salkeld wasn't a great pitcher, but for seven starts in early 1996 he hit a vein of good form where he posted a 2.41 ERA over 41 IP. He turned back into a pumpkin and never pitched in the majors after 1996, but those who remember his glorious June of that season have been given a treasure that will last a lifetime.
    I'm not a system player. I am a system.

So, is he our Game 1 starter when the playoffs roll around?

I'm not ready to anoint him for next year's rotation, but it does seem possible they've identified a major league arm. That's really important for this club. Pen needs a couple more at a minimum.

His minor league K numbers are certainly not great but they're not absurdly low: 8.3 per 9 over 205 innings.

    A couple other comps:

Jack Armstrong the first 12 weeks of 1990.

Or…and I’ll admit this is pie in the sky, but what about Jimmy Haynes ca. 2002?

    Justin Lehr comes to mind
“I don’t care,” Votto said of passing his friend and former teammate. “He’s in the past. Bye-bye, Jay.”

    BTW

I L O V E this guy, he is what makes this stupid journey to baseball memory circa 2022 a little special. If you ever have read any Roger Angell then you might get it, this game is a treasure trove of stories, nuances, life lessons

Wins and losses are what we hang our emotions on, the rest is sports fan character building

Re: The Connor Overton Appreciation Thread

Something tells me he's not going to sustain this sub 2.00 ERA with a 3.6 K/9, but so long as the outs are already in the bank, I'll take 'em.
Games are won on run differential -- scoring more than your opponent. Runs are runs, scored or prevented they all count the same. Worry about scoring more and allowing fewer, not which positions contribute to which side of the equation or how "consistent" you are at your current level of performance.

Re: The Connor Overton Appreciation Thread

Overton’s main source of “lucky” is that he has yet to give up a HR. However, he is a ground ball pitcher, 1.40 GB/FB ratio, so when they come, they shouldn’t be too big of an issue.

My guess is he turns into a 4-5 ERA pitcher over a full season, which is respectable for a back of the rotation starter.

Much prefer watching him over Mahle and his “strike out every guy approach”. Easy to cheer for.

I’d wager FCB’s second born that Connor Overton won’t get 14 wins.

My dad got to enjoy 3 Reds World Championships by the time he was my age. So far, I've only gotten to enjoy one. Step it up Redlegs!

But will he start the All-Star game?
...the 2-2 to Woodsen and here it comes...and it is swung on and missed! And Tom Browning has pitched a perfect game! Twenty-seven outs in a row, and he is being mobbed by his teammates, just to the thirdbase side of the mound.

Connor Overton has a sore back so Graham Ashcraft will start Sunday for the Reds. It’ll be his big-league debut
