Happy Mother's Day-- 5/8 Minor League Scores

Reiver Sanmartin returns to Louisville. Well, okay. Technically, he's returned to Indianapolis, but that might be confusing. After a less than inspiring opening month to his season with the parent club, he looks to get back on track in AAA. The Bats play at 11:35.

Chattanooga starts Sam McWilliams (we think). Hopefully, they'll have better pitching today. McWillias is a former Ray and Padre. He's gotten a couple cups of coffee with AAA. Neither went well. McWilliams is from Hendersonville, TN. Hendersonville is a suburb of Nashville and has some gorgeous homes. Residents have included Conway Twitty, Marty Stuart, and Taylor Swift. Johnny Cash had a house there, but, as the Gatlin Brothers sing, it burned down.

Dayton turns to Andrew Abbott. Abbott might have had the most eye-opening beginning of the season of any Red prospect-- arguably, a top 10 opening for any prospect in baseball. He's shown he's a borderline top 100 guy right now, IMO. At age 23, he's a little old for High A, but his numbers show he may need to bump up in competition. Among starters, he's thrd in the league in ERA, 5th in Ks, 10th in WHiP, tops in K/9, and 10th in K/BB. He and Joe Boyle may need to be challenged-- watch for movement at the halfway point of the season.

Daytona starts Arij Fransen. He was born in the Netherlands. There have been 11 major leaguers who were Dutch. Who was the Hall of Famer who hailed from that area of the world? (No fair looking it up-- rely on your baseball knowledge.)

I don’t know if you do Facebook or not but I have a Facebook group , Cincinnati Reds Farm System. As far as I can tell it’s the only group on Facebook following the Reds farm System. I would love to see you there.

Graham Ashcraft, having been skipped yesterday, came out today to prove his naysayers wrong. Then he threw up pretty much the same game he has since he began AAA. Lots of walks (5). Few hits (3). Hardly any runs (0 earned, 1 total). A few Ks (3). It was enough to earn the win, as he went 5 innings and now has a 1.63 ERA. Peripherals be darned, that's solid production.

Payano, Detwiler, and Cruz finished it up.

Cristian Santana had two more hits. He's been hot recently. Motter had two hits; his OPS is up over 900 with his 3rd round tripper of the season. Aquino hit his first. With the additions of Aquino, Motter, and Riddle, that Bat lineup suddenly has some thump in it. Bauers played today for the first time in quite a bit too. Glad to see him back.

The Dayton Dragons returned the favor today on the Lake City Captains, shutting them out, 2-0. Elly De La Cruz had a hit, his 8th(!) SB, and a walk. (Love to see the walk.) Andrew Abbott turned in six innings of three-hit, 0 BB, 0 ER, 5 K dominance, but didn't get the win. That belonged to RP James Marinan, who went three no-hit, 2 BB, 3 K innings on the piggyback. The Dragons are now 19-7 on the year.

I've been playing with the idea of what that could look like.

Abbott and (IMO) Boyle move to AA. Bonnin stays put for now in Dayton, but moves up when he proves healthy and capable of going six. McWilliams and Curlis either move to the pen or are released. That leaves Chattanooga with a rotation of Brandon Williamson, Carson Spiers, Boyle, Abbott, Eduardo Salazar.

Dayton's been piggybacking, so the loss is pretty easy to overcome there (though they lose two dominant starters). A rotation of Bonnin, Phillips, Proctor, Farr, and Kravetz is decent. Benschoter, Petty, or Julian Aguiar could move to Dayton. Especially Benschoter, who's 24. Or Roa could move into one of those roles as a kind of rehab. (Being close to Cincinnati might help them keep an eye on him.)

Daytona has already had 10 guys start games this season in 26 games total. 7 of them have ERAs under 4.00. They can likely afford to lose a couple.

Speaking of Chattanooga pitching, it was poor again today. McWilliams gave up 5 earned in 2.1 IP. Ick.

Lookouts scores 6. Trash Pandas scored 7.

Chattanooga had a chance in the 9th. Two on, no out. Sacrifice bunt. Sacrifice fly. K. (This is why the sacrifice bunt is such a poor play.)

Siani and Gilliam had a couple hits apiece. Siani stole a base, his 8th. Gilliam hit a 2B. Tenerowicz had three hits and now sports an 801 OPS.

Reds' affiliates go .500 on the day. Daytona drops one, 5-2. Four errors led to the downfall of the Tortugas. Chase Petty was collared with the loss for giving up one earned in three innings. Nine BBs from Tortuga pitchers didn't help. Maybe they all missed their moms?

Sebastian Almonte had a couple of hits.

That's really about the entirety of the highlights for this game.

    Bleh.

Graham Ashcraft FB was 96-100mph, changeup at 90-91. Indy was able to catch up to his FB which looked straight like Greene's. His run came after 2 hard hit singles and throwing error by Ashcraft. His breaking ball is similar to Boyle a little tighter. Walked the first 2 batters in the 5th and Pirates's no.1 prospect popped up, next batter force out. Last batter bounced out nice job by Ashcraft.

Andrew Abbott FB was 91-93mph. Great command of his breaking ball. He's hittable but can pitch out of jams. In the 4th there was runners 1st 3rd bad guys Abbott got a line drive out to 3rd and runner at 1st got doubled up. Decent pitcher but doesn't dominate hitters.

He's been among the best stories amongst Red minor leaguers so far.

I'd argue Boyle, McLain, and Abbott are the most promising, with Petty, Hendrick, Siani, Cedrola, and Solomon behind.

    Any others?
