    Re: Extending Castillo

The Reds either need to extend Castillo or trade him. Holding him into his free agency makes no sense. Draft pick isn’t enough to compensate for his loss.

Luis is a good extension candidate because he’s a good GABP pitcher. Strikeouts and ground balls. Fits the ballpark much better than Tyler Mahle.

I could go either way, extend him or trade him for value. Depends on what deal Reds can make in either case.

    Re: Extending Castillo

Luis is not consistent enough to be a #1 he's really a #2 and maybe even a #3 on a strong team.

I would be fine trading him personally... as long as the haul isn't complete garbage but usually is

Everyone go look at what Castillo has done over his last 450 innings while playing half his games in this ballpark. Seriously.

Honestly at this point I wouldn’t be too shaken up by them trading Castillo. Even aggressive apathy towards this team aside, he’s just inconsistent enough that I would be very on the fence about ponying up a major extension for him. I could easily see him sliding into mediocrity as a 4+ ERA pitcher. I think he’s a good choice to trade that you can gamble on replacing him and also get a pretty good return for him as well.
    Completely agree with this take

    The return should be massive.

Definitely a good pitcher. Honestly one of my biggest concerns would be replacing a guy who has proven he can throw almost 200 innings each year.

He’s just had enough bumps in his performance at times, and now coming off a shoulder injury, I would be hesitant to drop 100 mil on him when the time comes. I would’ve done so for say, Cueto, who was a better pitcher as a Red than Castillo has been, and you can see how that’s worked out for the Giants.

The only time I would ever do a massive LTC for a pitcher is if they don’t have any major red flags. I hope Greene turns into that kind of guy. Castillo just isn’t that for me at this point.

    Re: Extending Castillo

I think they should try to trade him but extend him if all they get are shark offers.

It would be a nice thing in general for the Reds to embrace, as opposed to their standard "get fleeced because everyone knows you're desperate" method they've been going with so far.

    Re: Extending Castillo

So if Krall acts this desperate to trade him, everyone will be skeptical that he’s damaged goods and you get nothing.

Krall needs to watch Castillo return to health, succeed, and patience will be rewarded with real offers.

This is a big chip. Can’t miss it. Eric jageilo and Ricardo aramboles ain’t gonna do it for me on this one.

    Re: Extending Castillo

That Gammons tweet doesn't sit right with me. They were clearly shopping Mahle and Castillo around this off season. I don't think they ever stopped shopping them around, so why say that they're suddenly listening again? And why now when Mahle's value is fairly low and Castillo just now made his first start of the season?

    Re: Extending Castillo

Seriously you would have to ask why Castillo would agree to an extension unless it was a massive contract. Most top players don’t want to play for a losing organization.

Peter Gammons' comment sounds to me like sheer non-information. Of course they're listening on Castillo and Mahle. Hardly qualifies as news.

    Re: Extending Castillo

The most recent comp to Castillo who's been traded is Berrios last deadline. He landed the #5 overall pick in 2020 and a 2018 second round pick(48th overall). I think if the Reds could do better than that given Castillo's recent shoulder concerns they should be all over it.
