the initial conversations with the Reds about Winker started just after the end of the 2021 season and continued at the GM meetings in November.
    [...]

By the time Krall reached out, Hollander said things had changed. Winker was not just a target, he was the target.

“As we spent time on Jesse during the lockout, he just stuck out as the most special bat available at the post-lockout frenzy,” Hollander explained. “Whenever that ended we felt that was a bat that that was not available anywhere else on the market.”

    [...]

He [the seattle GM] said he woke up at about 5 and couldn’t get out of his head how we might be able to add Suárez to this deal and how it might help us and some of the mechanics we had talked about,” Hollander recounted. “I walked into his office and he had it all laid out on the board, and then we vetted it through the whole baseball group and then we spent about 30 hours going back and forth with the Reds on different iterations, different names, more players, less players.”

Oh I am sorry Ron, you already replied with the source.. If I had read the rest of this thread, it would have saved me rereading the entire trade thread and finding where you posted it there
    Thanks for the response though.

I really feel bad for that gm... basically, he could have given the Reds "anything" just to take them, so he did not want to cheat himself overpay. Such an agonizing dilemma.

It really is wild how bad the Mariners have been. And they have been pretty healthy. They were one of the teams that “won” the offseason.
What would you say.....ya do here?

I could foresee this timeline (barring injury or ineffectiveness):
    2022 - Low A
2023 - High A for most of the season and a few starts in AA
2024 - AA for most of the season and a few starts in AAA
2025 - AAA for most of the season with a few starts in MLB
I think that's a realistic timeline if he doesn't have injuries or just stalls on the way up. I think that's too long to wait after trading 2 years of cheap control of a solid starter like Sonny Gray. Probably 2027 before he's an established big league pitcher.

I agree on not loving the return for Gray. I think your 2025 date sounds jarring until you realize it only takes one extended injury or bout of ineffectiveness for it to be very true.

In the last thirty days Geno has 48 Ks in 113 ABs

    That’s 42.4% of his ABs

Suarez is right on pace to break Reynolds strikeout record (223). He leads the league so far with 63 after racking up 10 in his last 6 games.

Winker OPS drops below .600 (.598) after an 0-4 today. It’s Memorial Day. I honestly did not see this coming.

As much as I like Geno as a person and loved his time as a Red, he is the epitome of what is wrong with baseball today. It’s all about me, home run or bust.

Re: The New “The Trade” Results

What Winker is doing right now is mind boggling. Seattle made the trade thinking they were getting one of the best RHP mashers in the game and so far da Wink has a .501 OPS and 0 HR in 140 PA vs RHP. Easily one of the most bizarre stats of the year so far IMO. I expected a power and OPS drop leaving GABP, but I still thought he's easily be an .800 OPS guy going forward. Maybe he'll hit one of his hot streaks and get it going soon.

Meanwhile Williamson has a 2.48 ERA in 5 starts in May(much more in line with his numbers last year), and Phillips has his ERA at 2.53 after 8 starts and has been one of the most prolific SO pitchers in all of MILB ranking 7th overall with 66.

I don’t understand trying to make it a personal flaw.
