    Babe Ruth

I just came across this picture of Babe Ruth that I'd never seen before. If you're into the mechanics of hitting, this pic is a revelation.

I've seen a lot of choppy old video of his stroke, but this is the best thing I've seen of how he loads up.

    Talk amongst yourselves.

    Re: Babe Ruth

I have often been asked what I think is the success of Bae’s heavy hitting. To me this is simple. He has good batting eye. He is tall and heavy and strong. His weight is in his shoulders, where it will do him the most good. He is a tremendously powerful man. He uses an enormous bat, so heavy that most players would find it an impossible burden to him however it is just right
    ~ Walter Johnson
“My theory is the bigger the bat, the farther the ball will travel. It’s really the weight of the bat that drives the ball. My bat weighs 52 ounces. Most bats weigh 36 to 42 ounces.”

Yep, and looking at that picture I'm convinced he swung those huge bats with a very tight radius. He's loaded up inside, and he's got a Gary Sheffield wrist cock going there.

Bonds had the most efficient killing stroke I ever saw, it was machine engineered beauty.

This is a bit more artful.

Hank Aaron disagreed. He used the lightest bat he could, usually a 33 ounce bat. He claimed it gave him more whip on his swing which lead to more power.

This book “Batting “ by FC Lane from 1925 is great as it encompasses all the approaches a batter had in the game a 100 years ago and a lot are still applicable

This is a painting of that same photo by the incomparable Graig Kreindler. He is, simply put, the best baseball artist out there. Do yourselves a favor and check out his work. I won't post any other paintings and ruin his talent for you. He has a website and Facebook page as well. Enjoy.

Theres a swing analysis video on Youtube of the Babe. It's worth a watch/listen if you have 10 minutes.

    That was really interesting. Thanks.

Handling a huge bat like that wouldn't be possible today, against the late breaking stuff he'd see.

It was a swing for the times. Reminds me a lot of Hogan's "magic move" in golf.

Bonds still had the most efficient stroke ever, in large part because he got to hang out over the plate with body armor and swell up like the incredible Hulk. He was also a magnificent talent, too bad he isn't remembered that way.

Again, a swing for the times.

It's entirely possible I saw it last week.

Not always sure what I had for breakfast.

The Say Hey kid! Had his poster on the wall growing up.

Another guy with a really big stride into the ball and other-worldly talent.

You can just see the timing, the hands back, the weight transfer in that picture.

    Nobody swings like that anymore.

    My all time favorite player.
