Joe Boyle deserves his own thread after tonight.

Boyle is putting up some X-Box numbers in 2022.

Tonight's line: 5 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB. 12 K. That drops his season's ERA to 0.65 in 55.1 innings. He has made 12 starts and given up a total of 15 hits. He now has struck out 90 batters in 55.1 IP, or 14.7 per 9 IP. The zero walks tonight is outstanding.

Here is a quick clip of Boyle's 12k performance. First batter he was wild. Settled down then mowed through the Loons.

He could probably go 2 innings out of the bullpen once every 3 days in the majors right now. Is that crazy? I’ve never been that sane.

The Dragons uniforms are awful. Look like a poor high school team.

    I've always been a fan.

If this kid's legit, a rotation of Greene, Lodolo, Ashcraft, Boyle, and Who Cares could be pretty good for a long time.
My dad got to enjoy 3 Reds World Championships by the time he was my age. So far, I've only gotten to enjoy one. Step it up Redlegs!

Boyle's skill set should play well in GABP because the pressure of Boyle's gas is inversely related to the volume it is contained in- this means his gas should be even more pressure packed in a small stadium such as GABP

If we are being honest it's a dad joke wrapped in a middle school student's understanding.

I think Boyle's command issues will likely persist in the higher levels. In my mind he's a relief prospect - a good one - until he gets the BB/9 issue under control. I know his most recent start was much better, but 6 BB/9 won't cut it, and you wonder how much worse it could get against more seasoned AA/AAA batters.

I don’t think he is a relief prospect. His stuff seems to hold up well (at least it does over 5 innings) but I do agree that he has to fix the command issues. Hitters are more discerning as you climb the ladder and he will spend a lot of time trying to get guys out from 3-0 or 3-1 counts which traditionally does not go well. The flip is maybe he is the rare guy whose stuff is so good he can carry walk rates close to 5 and still be a good starter. Randy Johnson was 4-5bb/guy for the first 6years of his career and was solid. Now once he got that down to 3 he morphed into all time great. It will be interesting to watch. He does need to move up to AA regardless

Re: Joe Boyle deserves his own thread after tonight.

IMO, guys who sit 98-100+ mph are no longer novelties. Every organization has perhaps 8-10 guys scattered in the majors and minors who can hit triple digits on the radar fairly consistently. Ironically, it always comes down to the secondary pitches. Most of those triple digit pitchers can develop a serviceable slider/curve. But the key to staying in the rotation as a starter is an off-speed pitch, such as a change-up. Without a halfway decent change-up, those 100+ mph pitchers are not going to be anything more than relief pitchers in the upper minors and the majors.

The key for guys like Joe Boyle, Hunter Greene, and Chase Petty to stick as a starter is going to be two things: an effective off-speed pitch, and throwing strikes. 100 mph fastballs look great on the radar guns, but they don’t fool major league hitters. In fact, they don’t fool AAA or AAAA hitters either. It may take hitters an inning or two to get their timing down, but by the time they face the pitcher the second time, they pretty well have him and his fastball/slider figured out. And not giving away free passes via walks will add to their success.

Agreed. Petty is already making the transition. He isn't gassing up to triple digits and chasing Ks. He's throwing strikes and keeping his pitch count under control. Excellent progress for the 19 year old, I'd say. Greene and Boyle don't have the heavy, sinking fastball that Petty, does, so they may never be able to use the infield defense the way Petty has the potential to.
