Any team taking all of their top 3 prospects off the table for Castillo should be ruled out as a trading partner by default. You’re not willing to pony up, then you don’t get the best pitcher available.

I agree that Reds shouldn’t do this. But Moose is due a great deal of money over the next year. Not sure there’s another way to get rid of that commitment. Not sure anyone would eat Moose’s contract by accepting a lesser player. Maybe not even Tyler Mahle.

So I wouldn’t rule this out, though hopefully Reds will think better of it. Would still hope Reds could structure a Mahle deal with Moose, rather than a deal for Luis.

Pretend that $22 million they owe him in 2023/2024 is already gone and stop thinking it could be a good idea to unload it to obtain a weaker return. The only place that savings would go is Bob's pocket.

You don't use two of the best trade chips on the market to save money. you maximize the return and increase your odds of obtaining prospects that become stars.

This one works on Baseball Trade Values.

Reds trade Mahle, Moose, and Drury to LA Dodgers for LA pitching prospect Michael Grove.

Where did I say it was a “good idea?” Why did you purport to quote me while eliminating “I agree the Reds shouldn’t do this?”

Pretend the Reds also owe Moose $8 million for the rest of this season for a total of $30 million. Pretend Reds could redeploy $30 million to add considerable major league talent.

You're suggesting you'd consider doing it for Mahle and have brought up attaching Moustakas to deals in the past.

    No. No. No.

It’s worth considering for Mahle. Again, if you traded Moose tomorrow you save (by my count) $30 million.

That’s a considerable amount of dough for next off-season.

    Re: Reds Trade Rumors

Are you aware how this franchise works? The Reds spent $10+ mil on Mike Minor and you want me to support the idea that it's better to free up more money as opposed to acquiring better prospects? No thanks.

The Reds need significant young, controllable talent. The only way you're adding that is via the draft and trades.

They aren't 1 player away where a big FA signing can change the trajectory of a season/open a window.

They have $44 million committed next year. They don't need an influx of cash, they need an influx of talent.

We’re trying to trade Mahle and Drury together….for one pitcher who is 25 with a 6.52 minor league ERA?

Have we all collectively decided to take up huffing glue in this scenario?

Definite bizarro world of the Reds, whom are t contending next year, reduce Castillo haul to lose moose, then turn around and spend $30m on marginal free agents again.

I flat out don’t trust this front office to make anything resembling a good trade, short, medium, or long term.

That’s a considerable amount of money that the owners will put in their pocket. The Reds do not need to knock their 2023 guaranteed payroll down to Joey Votto to spend money next year.

Reds are considerably more likely to spend on free agents if Moustakas’ salary is off the books.

The deal I noted for Grove works out exactly even in Baseball Trade Values. That’s why I presented it. I don’t know much about the website and how often they update their values. I assume it’s frequent.

The Dodgers’ acceptance of Moose’s contract obviously has a big part in it. I used Drury and Grove because it resulted in an exactly even trade, according to that website.

and when they attach Moose to Castillo and/or Mahle and they wind up with a payroll under $90 million next year, and they’ve signed a couple stiffs and and Kent Merker out of retirement as their veteran fifth starter, and lose 95 games?

    Re: Reds Trade Rumors

Grove is a nothing prospect. That would be trading Mahle and Drury just to salary dump Moose. The Reds should be focused on getting the best players possible for Castillo and Mahle. If they don't come out of these trades with 3 or 4 high upside top 100 caliber prospects I'll consider it a fail.
