Sonny Corleone in the Godfather, Brian Piccolo in Brian's Song, and so many other great roles.

    Re: RIP James Caan

There was a great documentary awhile back that compared the careers of Caan and Schwarzenegger. Caan constantly took great acting roles in smaller movies that required depth and skill while Arnold carefully chose roles that hid is lack of acting skills but were in bigger, popular movies.

Caan never sold out, but if he had, he could have been as big a movie star as Arnold.

It's official. We are never getting that Freebie and the Bean sequel. On a more serious note, you know Caan was good because directors like Hawks, Peckinpah, Altman and Coppola kept casting him. And Brian's Song doesn't get remembered for being the monoculture titan that it was. Everyone saw it and Caan made an entire nation cry its eyes out.

    Re: RIP James Caan

Last film I saw Caan act in was Dogville (Lars Von Trier’s brechtian take on the USAj. He played the mobster father to Nicole Kidman’s protagonist. He was typically excellent.
There is a great scene/conversation at the end of the film, where father and daughter debated the justifiability of human society (ie the town / US capitalism) when society continually wastes opportunities to redeem itself. They debated the question of whether society’s “best” was good enough, and therefore deserved forgiveness and their right to continue. Caan won the debate by convincing Nicole Kidman that it did not deserve her forgiveness and compassion and she therefore destroyed the town and massacred all the human inhabitants, leaving only one dog alive.
