Castillo strands runners at first and third in the top of the first inning

There are about 6 other relievers on the team who are totally incapable of pitching 3 innings of scoreless relief spread out over 3 appearances, let alone in one. Just a clueless move by management. They could have made a statement indicating roster spots were actually performance based.

There’s little to be gained today by Castillo pitching. His trade value is about as high as it can go. Let’s just get a respectable performance and get him out of there.

26 pitches for Castillo. 12 for McClanahan. Only one of those guys will be pitching in the 7th inning. Good thing the bullpen is the strength of the Reds.

He isn't getting traded for 3 more weeks. Can't let him go 80 pitches and 5 innings every game till then.
Other teams that have trade chip pitchers aren't handling them with kid gloves.
Is it risky? You bet it is. But they aren't going to coddle him.
I suspect Castillo would put up a big fuss if they did and rightfully so.

The Rays lineup seems to be full of battlers and tough outs. That's something that worries me big time about the Reds future. All their top position players have pretty big swing-and-miss and plate discipline concerns.

That said, I can think of a few other relievers who should have been sent down before Dugger.
Reportedly, Jared Solomon was the “doubleheader move.” Brought up for a day as the 27th man and optioned right back.

The Reds cut Dugger to make room for Alexis Diaz.

I assume they felt Dugger needed rest after last night. Probably didn’t think much risk in waiving him. If they’re wrong and he gets selected, Reds will look bad. Probably the risk is low, but you never know.

12 pitches to 26 after one! The quickness to the bullpen will probably tell the story of this game. Castillo 1,2,3 in the 2nd, but another 18 pitches.
