    Re: Reds draft.

When it comes to "First to the Show" from this class (as long as he stays healthy) I'm gonna go with Logan Turner. Has a howitzer for an arm, is supposed to be excellent at handling a staff, has played against a high-level of competition in college, LH-hitting catcher who has some power.

The hit tool is considered pretty iffy (but what backup catcher's in MBL isn't) There is some hope he can improve somewhat with work on his swing. If not Tanner, could be one of the college arms if they decide to put them on a bullpen path.

reds saved more money with tanner logan and bryce hubbert than i expected ... but didn't save as much as i thought they would with stewart and boyd.

regardless, i'm confident they will sign collier and i love this draft. it's always interesting to see the financials, who signed for over slot (and how much), who signed for under (and how much) and who signed exactly at slot.

    Looks like Collier got PAID.

Good for him. Now sign Brutti and Chadwick and that'll be 21 signed of 22 picks. Not bad.

    Per Mark Sheldon:

Cam Collier signed and received $5 million bonus. It’s above the $3.659 slot value for the 18th pick.

By my calculation, (and i'm often wrong) the Reds still have about 150K plus any savings on 9 and 10 if they want to stay within the 5% overage.

Interested to see what the system rankings are now that the top picks are in the fold. Brutti would be a nice sign, but not sure he will bypass college.

Can someone explain to me like I’m a first grader how the slot money works. Collier signed well above his slot money. Do the Reds get penalized for this?

Unless the new CBA changes it, slot pool money is based on a team's top ten selections plus any compensatory picks plus competitive balance picks. Each pick in the first 10 rounds has a slot value. A player may sign for under or over the slot amount. A team can spread the money among its 10 rounds, with some players going over and others going under slot. As long as the team stays within its pool for the ten rounds, there is no penalty. A team going over the pool amount is penalized. They pay a 75% penalty on the excess up to a 5% overage. If they exceed their pool by more than 5% there are lost draft picks as well. No team has ever done this.

It is my understanding that picks 11-20 can be signed for 125K without counting against the pool. Any amount over 125K counts against the pool.

how much money exactly is 5% over? reason i ask is right now they are $388K over. if your calculations are correct, they could sign picks 9 & 10 for well under slot, save about an extra $150K or $200K, and then be able to offer 11th-round pick ben brutti as much as $425K or $475K to sign, without being penalized.

5% over is 539.9K. Let's say they save 150K on picks 9 and 10 (probably a safe number). Your figures for an offer are pretty much in range. If the Reds were to go this route, it would cost them about 405K in penalties.

    YES!

Really like Brutti's profile, especially as a late-round draftee. Big stuff. Big, projectable body. Cold weather guy. Two above average pitches.
