    Re: Noelvi Marte

Q&A with #2 prospect Noelvi Marte.

At Redsfest earlier this month, I had a conversation with Marte about coming to the Reds. His answers were translated by Jorge Merlos.

MLB.com: You’ve been added to the 40-man roster this offseason. What does going to your first big league Spring Training mean for you?

Marte: It’s definitely a dream come true. Obviously, this is one first step in my career -- the first step of many things to come.

MLB.com: With all the shortstops now in this organization, are you worried about moving to a different position? How open are you to that possibility?

Marte: I’ve never been changed or told to play another position beforehand. Luckily, in the [Arizona] Fall League, they told me to play third base. I was getting accustomed to that.

It’s not about where you play, it’s about how you help the team win. I’m willing to go wherever I am needed, whether it’s the outfield or whatever it is.

MLB.com: How was the Arizona Fall League for you?

Marte: It got a little complicated at first, because I was trying out a new position at third base and trying to figure out where to stand. Luckily, our [Minor League infield] coordinator José Nieves was there to help me out. He was able to position me well out there. As the season went on, I was able to get more comfortable and adapt very well.

MLB.com: What will you work on before Spring Training?

Marte: Physically, I have to get better. Little tweaks here and there with my batting. Normally, you can find ways to get better there. Defensively, I have to get better as well.

    Nice weekend for Marte.

    Walk-off Homerun on Friday.

    3-Run late-inning jack on Sunday.

    Re: Noelvi Marte

I'm getting pretty excited about Marte. With our general track record and luck I half expected him to stop hitting once he joined the Reds org, but he did well last year and an .892 OPS as a 21-year-old in AA has put that fear at ease. Tied for second in HRs in the Southern League too.
“I don’t care,” Votto said of passing his friend and former teammate. “He’s in the past. Bye-bye, Jay.”

Really hoping he can stick at 3B and potentially even be great there. Could be a pretty big deal for the Reds.

    Re: Noelvi Marte

The recent hot streak for him has got him close to 300 and striking out less.

If he continues at this pace we will see in up here maybe early next year. He's going to be in AAA once either ELDC or CES comes up I'd think.

Marte has only started 9 games at third this year and 25 at SS. If the Reds view him as a future third baseman they are certainly going about it in a weird way. I have little doubt that Marte's bat is going to play at the highest level, but where is he going to play on defense? I could see him in RF, but the Reds need to get proactive abut the upcoming IF logjam.

I don’t get this either. Maybe they refuse to move guys off shorstop until there is a clear vacancy elsewhere. Right now three future Reds starters, and maybe a fourth, are all playing short, McLain, EDLC, Marte, and Arroyo.

I'm guessing Marte really wants to stick at SS. The Reds are trying to appease him, while letting him develop offensively. They figure that if he can handle shortstop, he can handle 3B. (Which, for the most part, is absolutely right.)

If McLain and/or EDLC lay claim to the SS position, Marte will then be shuffled elsewhere-- likely at Marte's request.

    Re: Noelvi Marte

I would hope Marte gets the bump to AAA next month when Elly is called up and I’d hope they start giving him some reps in RF. He seems to me like a perfect candidate to be the Reds RF for the rest of the decade.

Even if India (or Senzel) is the 3B for the foreseeable future, it’s likely Collier’s landing spot in a few years. Give Noelvi a place he can call home for a long long time.
