I hope he's turned a corner, but this could just be another in the pattern of up and down he's shown all year. He had lots of rest and came out strong, but we'll see how he finishes. I hope for 2023 they get a veteran with a solid track record to be the "staff leader" and de facto ace and hope that Greene and Lodolo can maintain health and consistency to push the vet more into the number 3 type role by the end of 2023. I'm a believer that you need multi-seasons in the big leagues to know what a guy is going to be. This year has shown a ton of promise, but Greene is a 5ish ERA guy until he's not and there isn't enough time left for him to prove he's anything other than that. The Reds should plan accordingly.
Lodolo is the ace of this staff right now and will likely be better than any veteran they could bring in next year.

...and he's probably going to be limited to 120 innings next year since he's never pitched more than 87 in a season (this year).

He has thrown 100 innings this year (a handful in the minors in addition to the 87 MLB innings). I think Lodolo will be allowed to go 150 IP or so next year if health allows.

This team started 3-23. Anything is still possible.

Who do you see the Reds signing that pitches better than Lodolo in the second half? My point was they don’t need some middling vet to be a de facto ace because they already have a guy who is capable of pitching like an ace. If you want to sign some middling type vet, that’s your 4-5 starter.

If he stays healthy, I think you could be right. He missed half of 2021 in the minors with back issues. Missed half of 2022 in the majors with back issues. Back issues tend to keep resurfacing. Even if he's healthy, they need more than He, Greene and Ashcraft and I don't think they have it.

A number 1 through 3 starter is more than a middling vet. Pre-injury Homer Bailey or vintage Aaron Harang are guys I consider number 3 caliber starters.

And he was still two steps down from guys who were the best pitchers in the league when he played

There’s no scenario where a 6 WAR pitcher is a middle of the rotation guy

Harang was 6th in all of the majors in fWAR from 2005-2007. (Assuming we are talking about his peak)

And 28th in ERA if you prefer, so still a top of the rotation guy.

My gut says with 11 games left they will try very hard to reach 100 losses. But come up a bit short

They have the skills to lose 100, but it might hinge on how much the Pirates don't want to lose 100.

General thought: it's kind of deflating for the team to be this bad and not lose 100. It's been a dire, hopeless season. They could at least make it legendary.

    Current pace Reds lose 99.

Will probably come down to last series.
