BA had them at 4, 11 and 14 in their updated team rankings. All 3 are having very strong seasons.

On first glance, having reviewed the Twins system, this is quite a good package. Not the Castillo group, but very good.

Re: Mahle traded to the Twins

It is definitely not the Mariners trade but these prospects look pretty good on paper at least. Hajjar and Encarnacion-Strand are college players with good numbers in their little bit of MILB experience while Steer is likely MLB ready. I get kind of a Brian Dozier/Todd Frazier vibe from him.

How well the deal looks will probably depend on Steer and if he's a legitimate prospect or just an overachiever.

Don’t like this return much. I thought any Twins deal would at least net Simeon Woods or Alex Kiriloff. None of these guys have very high ceilings.

Re: Mahle traded to the Twins

I like Steer quite a bit from what I've read. From The Athletic in May:

In hitting 24 homers in 110 games, Steer had sacrificed some contact skills and strike-zone control, which is common when attempting to do more damage on swings. He still maintained a sound approach, with 55 walks and 110 strikeouts in 488 plate appearances, but it was a far cry from his nearly equal strikeout and walk numbers in college and his 2019 pro debut.

So far this season Steer is combining the best of both worlds, tapping into even more power while reducing his strikeout rate, a rarity for any prospect. Back at Double-A Wichita, he batted .308 with eight homers and 14 doubles/triples in 34 games for an eye-popping .602 slugging percentage that’s 174 points above the Texas League average. That earned him a promotion to Triple-A St. Paul.

“He narrowed his base in his setup and focused on engaging in a better, more powerful position early on in his load,” Hassan said, “which we felt unlocked a good bit of bat speed and leverage to drive the ball in the air more effectively.”

Steer has reduced his strikeout rate from 22 percent last season to 15 percent this season, which isn’t that far off from his 12 percent strikeout rate in college while barely showing any power. In drafting Steer in the third round, the Twins believed they could take a high-contact singles hitter and turn him into a high-contact power hitter, and it’s worked even better than anyone could have hoped.

Better yet, Steer has maintained the defensive versatility that once had many people projecting him as a potential major-league utility player. He bounced around the diamond for Wichita, playing regularly at third base, second base and shortstop. He’d likely be merely an emergency shortstop option in the big leagues, but Steer is an MLB-caliber defender at third base and second base.

Go look at Strand’s career minor league stats and you’ll feel a little bit better about this deal.

Only getting the 7, 18 and 23 rated prospect from a bottom tier prospect pool seems extremely light for an above average starter with another year of team control
Seems very light. Not happy with this deal at all

It's hard to stay in the buggy when there's only 2 hours left. All other type moves being made it can make a GM sweat a little.

I don't pay any attention to prospect rankings, but I like the numbers from all three. They all are having better years than a lot of the Reds top guys.

disagree. guys raking at AA at age 22 have high upside.

I'm very pleased a SP was included too. Plus there is still Drury, Solano and please god Senzel to deal.

Christian Encarnacion-Strand is an absolute stud. Steven Hajjar is having a fantastic season.
    So is Spencer Steer.

An underwhelming package, but Steer definitely looks like he'll be a useful piece soon.

Reds did well overall on Mahle - drafted in the 7th round, amassed 9.4 bWAR, and got some decent prospects in return.

    That's good business, I suppose.

Re: Mahle traded to the Twins

I find this return quite underwhelming.

Spencer Steer could be ok, but he could also be Seth Mejias-Brean.

The other two guys seem like filler, we'll be lucky if they ever make an impact in Cincy.

I would've sooner hung onto Mahle for now. There was clearly not much of a deadline premium.
