Love it. Not sure how you call this a "light" return, especially when Twins fans are calling this an expensive get.

I mentioned Christian Encarnacion-Strand in the discussions thread earlier as a possible return - he's tearing it up this year. He is closer to their Top 10 than #23 on MLB.com. Definitely not filler lol.

    Good point.

Also, a lot of hypothetical trades made here were for Drury/Mahle combined. So the initial impact of this does feel softer than expected.

I like that Steer will help ASAP, and that all 3 guys are having great seasons (and not just hyped up dudes from lists).

I think Encarnacion-Strand might be the crown jewel of the trade. He's murdered the ball at every stop in the minors. Dude hit for the cycle in his fourth game at AA:

Re: Mahle traded to the Twins

I think most of us would agree that there should have been one sure(r) bet in this trade given what Mahle has done at The Show and given the amount of control left. This trade doesn’t really have that. And really, you could argue there should be another higher quality bet to go with that.

Just looks like the true definition of lottery tickets here.

Was told weeks ago by #stlcards official what a good fit Mahle would be for their needs but with asterisk: 'Not the kind of thing we do in the division.'

Prospect tally: Steer (97th in Top 100), Encarnacion-Strand (14th in MN Top 30), Hajjar (11th in MN Top 30). Control galore.

They have juan-ed to do that for awhile.

Looks like all three of these prospects are having pretty good seasons.

I don't follow or study all the prospect list as much as many RZ members do but I like it so far. Like any trade, only time will tell how this deal works out.

And you thought it was tough fitting CONCEPCION in 4 inch caps on a uniform.

They’ll have to use 9 point Arial font to make this fit…

Likewise. This looks like a big meh. But, if one of them becomes a productive major leaguer views change.

Re: Mahle traded to the Twins

Gotta look past where they're ranked and look at actual performance.

    Steer age 24 (AAA) - .242/.345/.485/.830 - 12 HR - 2 SB - 43/28 K/BB in 232 PA (18.5%/12%). BABIP is .248
    *His BABIP have been .324, .299, .283, .274, and .318.
*OPS was .987 at AA before getting moved up to AAA.

    Steve Hajjar age 21 (A) - 2.47 ERA over 43.2 innings - 71/22 K/BB, WHIP 1.08
*FB can get low to mid 90s, change up is low 80s. Grades as 50's across the board with a 60 changeup.

    Christian Encarnacion-Strand age 22 (AA) - .333/.400/.685/1.085 - 5 HR - 1 SB - 14/4 K/BB ratio (was 85/30 in A+). Before being moved up had hit - .296/.370/.599/.969 with 20 HR and 7 swipes at A+.

Overall I might give the Twins a slight edge on the deal. If the Reds waited on the Montas package to pull the trigger that mightve been a mistake, shouldve known about Cashman and trades. Overall though I think this was a good deal for the Reds.

Re: Mahle traded to the Twins

Love the trade for Christian Encarnacion-Strand. Kid's 22 and has a 167 wRC+ across two leagues with an acceptable BB and K rate. His career minor league numbers are impressive:.320/ .384/ .609/ .993. So is the fact that he's only 22 and in AA. He's also HUGE. A 3B/ SS combo of he and De La Cruz might lead the league in yards of cloth used. (And numbers of letters.)

Steer's done his best Jonathan India impersonation in both AA and AAA this season, with an 800+ OPS, a tiny K rate, and a solid BB rate.

    And Hajjar's got a 14.6 K rate in 12 low A starts as a 21-year-old.

All three are performing well this season and both Steer (career line of .266/ .362/ .484/ .846) and Encarnacion-Strand have longer histories than that.

I expect all three to be of real help to the Reds in the next three seasons.

Re: Mahle traded to the Twins

I think Encarnacion-Strand is getting dinged for being a corner IF prospect who's likely 1B/DH bound which are never sexy, but at just 22 he's already destroying AA pitching. He could be for real.
“I don’t care,” Votto said of passing his friend and former teammate. “He’s in the past. Bye-bye, Jay.”
