Re: Reds Top Prospects - August 2022 Edition

Sam Dykstra released the MLB.com top 100 today and updated organizational top 30 lists.

Five reds in top 100 - L.E.D. (15), Marte (18), Arroyo (55), Collier (63), McLain (76) - L.E.D. was the second biggest riser jumping 61 spots since his last ranking.

In the Reds top 30, I find it interesting that he predicts 10 of those 30... a full third, will arrive in the majors in 2023.

One more interesting note... 24 of the top 100 are shortstops, so I guess that is the position where the prospect talent lies at the moment, so good on the Reds to focus there.

I love that 4 of the top 10 prospects in the organization are still teenagers and that 6 of the top 10 are 20 or younger.

Reds have signed some very interesting international players over the last couple years. Who knows where any of them will be 3-4 years from now, but every solid player begins as a huge question mark at first.

Interesting note for comparison on mlb.com rankings… Steve Hajjar was ranked at 18 in the Twins organization at the time of the trade, but he did not make it into the Red top 30.

Half of the Reds top 20 on MLB.com were acquired via the draft and by trades over the past month. That's quite a talent infusion to the system. The top 5 is pretty obvious though I might flip Collier and Arroyo. This is the best 1-30 that I can recall in recent memory though still a little light on the pitching side. I think if one of our current SP steps up to become a top ranked guy it'll be Petty.

They seem pretty high on Sal Stewart which is interesting, and I guess Strand can OPS 1.000 for 5 years and some of these publications will still be like "eh not impressed". Logan Tanner is a prospect to watch as we might be able to get Stephenson some help from withing the organization if Tanner's bat is there.

It's exciting to me that there are still guys with real potential that don't even appear in that top 30.
How do we know he's not Mel Torme?

I really like both guys we got from the Mets in the Naquin trade. Jose Acuna was my biggest snub when I first saw that top 30, but he's just getting established. Meanwhile Hector Rodriguez has only K'd 10 times in 150 PA this year while putting up a .950 OPS as an 18 year old.

Of the guys in the 20-30 range Almonte is the stand out for me as far as upside goes. He's went from 6'1 170 to 6'4 215 since being signed. If we have a next Elly in the system it's probably him.

It'll be fun to follow the guys in the ACL/ Daytona/ Dayton for a couple of seasons just to see what they might develop into.

I could see a massive roster of players moving up while playing sporadically in order to keep everyone developing.

Not that it matters much, but the bottom half of that list is pretty questionable by MLB.com.

Justin Boyd at 16? Tyler Callihan at 18? Austin Hendrick at 20? Not feeling that at all.

I do think their rankings of Reds prospects in the top 100 seems reasonable (although Elly is easily in my top 10). But the MLB.com lists always get wacky once you move beyond every team’s top 5 guys.

Yeah I agree with this, I don't put a lot of stock into them for that reason.

I agree. Yet that could be said about 90% of the prospect lists floating around. And sometimes I question many lists after the top three.

And they have 11 of the Reds top 30 with an ETA of 2023.

    I cant see that happening.

Marte arriving in 2023 seems the most unrealistic, as he’s still in Dayton. At best he starts in Chattanooga next year, and he would need to tear the cover off the ball there in order to end up in Cincy next year. Same goes for Callihan, who is not even hitting in Dayton and may not ever make the majors at all, let alone in 2023.

I could see Elly, McLain, Steer, Williamson, Abbott, Stoudt, CES, Johnson, Siani and Roa all making 2023 debuts though, barring injuries.

Let’s get McLain to Louisville already. Seems silly he’s not there.
