[Phil ] Castellini celebrated the team's farm system and noted the team had promising prospects who would one day be great Reds -- and then joke then they'd be ex-Reds, saying "of course we're going to lose them". #SellTheTeamBob

Yes and no. If the design was to just suck they wouldn’t have spent money on players like Moustakas, Castellanos, Shogo, etc - they would have just signed league min stop gaps, AAAA players, and minor leaguers. Basically, what the Pirates do. I’m not saying it will work, but if you squint hard enough right now there is something resembling a long term plan. The pirates do not have a plan.
I dislike Phil C as much as the next fan, but I think they have sucked the last 2 years because of incompetence, not by design.
What would you say.....ya do here?

It is the plan. They’ve said so. All the emphasis is on prospects and the longer term future. It’s not a terrible plan except at this point, after all the years of irrelevance, it’s hard to take.
But the Reds could now stray from the plan. They may not be able to take the heat from the media and fans. Especially after Phil C’s comment, where they gonna go, which was a major mistake.

Tiebreaker for draft position seems to be 2021 record. That’s bad for Reds who were over .500 last season.
So to beat out Pirates for third draft lottery position, Reds would have to finish one game worse in standings. Pirates play Cards who may play backups some as they rest guys for playoffs. Cards seem locked into third position in NL playoffs.
So Reds fans now need to root for Pirates to win, if area of interest is lottery position.

Forgetting for the moment that there’s no such thing as a small market team and pretending that the Reds really are cashed strapped, it doesn’t make sense for them to go spend money on short term help when they have no chance to win next year. A $100 million payroll in 2023 is just a waste of $25 million that they will not be able to spend later.
They’ll save the money for later (and be pound foolish).

I disagree. The way to do this is to spend as you go. That way, you are not at the mercy of one FA class.
Look for improvements every year. Don’t overspend on them. Add multi-year contracts. Build.
The model of not spending, not spending, not spending, and then suddenly spending doesn’t work IMO. It leads to classes like Shogo, Castellanos, and Moustakas.
