We had a guy like that a few years ago at Class AA Pensacola, Ray Chang. A career minor-league SS/2B/3B who played his four seasons at Pensacola, he announced that he was retiring at the end of the 2016 minor-league season shortly after his 33rd birthday. The Reds actually needed some middle infield depth on the bench at the end of September that year and I thought it would have been a nice gesture to reward him for being a good soldier with a final cup of coffee -- there was even room on the 40-man roster to make the move. But the Reds saw it differently.
