The AFOS guy always creeped me out as a kid. Definitely a signature eighties song, though.

Talking Heads had been doing a stellar job of skewering the era's zeitgeist (a shout here for "Life During Wartime"), but it was in 1985 where they decided that maybe they were being too subtle. So they made a toe-tapper designed to have everyone sing along ecstatically about how we were speeding headlong into a cul-de-sac.

I present you with "Road to Nowhere", where they just went and said the quiet part out loud.

Well said. Talking Heads and the Smiths changed R n’R. Talking heads were way better live and more interesting lyrics, while the Smiths were more witty and charming. For me, Talking Heads were the band of the 80s, and it was a good competition with Sonic Youth, Van Halen, Scorpions, New Order, REM and U2.
BTW, life during wartime is from fear of music from 1979. Talking Heads started the 80s off with Remain in Light and the “once in a lifetime” track.

So, some songs I do like that are still very eighties:

Nice choice with the Ultravox song. Their 1984 Greatest Hits album "Ultravox: The Collection" is one of my favorites. Absolutely fantastic album.

Gotta have some Tears for Fears in an 80s thread. Shout isn't my favorite song of theirs, but it may be the most 80s.

Hold Me Now is the most 80s song/video that I haven't already seen posted. They dress like the 80s. They sound like the 80s. And they are a British band that started in the 70s but adjusted their sound for the 80s. Check, check, check.

    Pete Rose, however... lol

At the time Debbie's debut album was released, my gf at the time was about a year older than Gibson.

The 52 y.o. singer-songwriter now goes by the name Deborah .

Not sure that I'll do this correctly, but surprised this hasn't come up. I don't know that its THE answer, but certain an answer. If I had to pick "The" answer, I think I'd go with Thriller.

Could also throw out this, I don't think its been mentioned yet:

Maybe the best performance of the 80's was by Queen at the Live Aid concert at Wembley Stadium. Freddie Mercury had that audience in the palm of his hand.

One of my favorite soccerfan chants came from Chelsea and their inefficient forward Jesper Gronkjaer, to the tune of living on a prayer:

“Oh no, halfway there. Oh no, Jesper Gronkjaer. Give him the ball, he’ll f—- up, I swear. Oh no, Jesper Gronkjaer”

I think it's their most iconic song and its live versions (particularly the Live Aid one posted here) took on lives of their own. Also, it's not really about anything. Bono's claimed it's about a dozen different things. I think heroin addiction is the most common, but his story changes frequently. What we can say is "Bad" is utterly epic, capable of making six-digit crowds sing along like it's the MOST important song ever made even though no one's actually sure what it means. We're wide awake. We're not sleeping. Well, okay then. Does it get more '80s than that?

No one could command a crowd like Mercury. I mean NO one!!!

You can toss a couple of Dire Strait songs onto the pile.
