I watched Lust For Life the other night. A biographical film about the life of Vincent van Gogh, based on the book by Irving Stone. Starred Kirk Douglas as Van Gogh and Anthony Quinn as Paul Gauguin.

A bit slow moving due mostly to just documenting Van Gogh’s life and it’s a mid-50’s movie. Quinn won an Oscar for best supporting actor but I thought his role was too heavy handed. Douglas was much better depicting Van Gogh’s tortured life. But visually, the movie was excellent depicting the French countryside in Van Gogh’s paintings.

They might be a bit formulaic, or even predictable in terms of how they are shot, but I actually find comfort in that.
Yeah Wild Things came on one night this week and I enjoyed it for the whole plot of it as well. Not just certain scenes as a younger guy lol.

Body of Evidence was the first movie with a NC-17 rating I recall renting/watching for Madonna. I watched the DVD of it recently and actually thought it was a suspenseful movie as well despite it considered one of the worst movies ever.

Sea of Love with Al Pacino was also very good. Fits this genre

Saw the 1991 Disney version of Beauty and the Beast at Music Hall today. The Cincinnati Pops plays the instrumental soundtrack and they show the movie on a big screen above the orchestra. It really is cool. They do this with many movies with great lush soundtracks.

I don’t think I’d seen this movie since the early 90’s. My girls used to watch it on VHS (showing my age).

The most recent Thor. That and Dr. Strange 2 were so awful in such a similar way that I’m so curious what is happening to the MCU behind the scenes. The writing, humor, character development, and special effects have fallen off a cliff and both films are so frantic and dumb that nothing feels consequential or satisfying. I thought Black Widow and Shang-Chi were well made and the most recent Spider-Man was a frantic mess but still fun. Woof to the last two movies though.

I saw Awakenings with Robin Williams this afternoon. It was recommended to me by a friend because I mentioned I was actually enjoying the Sandman on Netflix, and unbeknownst to me the sleeping sickness mentioned in the series was what Awakenings is based off of - encephalitis lethargica. I've seen thousands of movies in my life but some how missed this one.

I'd recommend it to anyone who likes Williams or DeNiro or films based loosely on real life individuals (Oliver Sacks).
