Minor went to his 3rd change-up in a row, an 0-2 single which knocked him out of the game. And Law finishes out the zero for the 6th to preserve the 5 run lead. If the bullpen gives up one run per inning to finish the game, it will work for the win. Any walks will be big black marks!

Guys who keep the ball on the ground can get away with that all day long as it takes too many hits strung together to score a couple of runs. They also get a lot of double-plays.

You've missed some of the articles where he goes into detail about the changes he's been working on. You can see the results in each at-bat. It's an entirely different approach, as he says....really, really hard to change. He's thinking so much on making the change it's exhausting him, I'm sure. But, he's not just up there hacking away like he used to. Every pitch he's thinking it through, trying his best to be patient, not guessing on a pitch, but actully trying his best to identify the pitch and gauge whether or not it's going to be in the strikezone or not "before" committing to swing. He's clearly laying off those pitches out of the strike zone and not letting pitches go by him that are in the strike zone without taking a cut. The results are more solid contact hits with the bat and fewer swing-and-misses. Pitch count is also higher. He's developing his hitting IQ.
There is lesser competition later in the season. Teams that aren't doing anything in the post season are putting less-talented, less-paid guys out there to see if they can do something, to evaluate them going forward for the next season and to maybe build off that. Did you just ignore what icehole3 said yesterday in the thread about what Eric Davis had to say about Aquino? You can't put much stock into what guys do late in the season when teams are tanking (and yes they do tank despite what the CBA was supposed to address).

Rucker tried going up the ladder for strike 3 to Friedl, but the first baseman with a great play to still get the out .

Davis was also speaking about Aquino regarding many weeks ago. That's the "hard work" that Aquino is talking about. Ask Davis about what he's seen the last couple of days with Aquino and you'll get a different answer. See post #68.

The lesser competition argument again is nonsense. You can't have it both ways or else the competition would do better against the REDS. Assad has a 2.93 ERA. WTF? How is that lesser competition?

The players coming in to replace "the Veterans" are more hungry and, if anything, are an improvement over the players they are replacing....in limited, sprinkled in...opportunities. It's not wholesale lineup changes. It's some PH opportunities, some late-inning replacement, the normal day games off, and it's replacing Veterans who are sucking to begin with. These younger players aren't replacing productive players. It's not "lesser competion".

Aristides Aquino changed his batting stance recently.

It’s worked out well for him so far with two homers in his last three games. That one was estimated 438 feet.

"It can be hard, especially when you’re not doing good. I’m working really hard, too. I’m so close to getting it."

Law struck out Madrigal. That's hard to do.

Law was a great pickup. That's someone who has a good chance (never know with Relievers until they start pitching during the season) to be a great addition to the team's roster next season.

If you're Aquino, and you have the cerebral Davis explaining things to you, changing things aren't going to happen overnight, but like you said, perhaps he felt the pinch of his career coming to an end after watching Friedl take off. Friedl took off because he changed his approach at the plate. That didn't go on deaf ears to Aquino. He saw someone taking his playing time away from him by doing what Davis told him he needs to do. As "hard" as it is to do, he's making the changes. Now with some success, that hard work isn't going to seem so hard and everything Davis told him all of a sudden makes itself louder in his head and has more meaning.

    Aquino leads off the 9th.
