Prediction: How Many Stick on the 40-Man Roster?

Cerda and Vellojin are both real prospects with big-time tools. Hopkins has a chance to be a fourth outfielder in the same vein as Freidl, but with a bit more pop. Free catches and has an idea at the plate.

All four are depth pieces, to be sure, but they're young depth pieces with tools.

You don't throw that in the woodchipper-- especially considering how many other options the Reds have in terms of getting rid of chaff.

I mostly agree. I said I'd put them on my 40-man roster. If they didn't I wouldn't be outraged and doubt it would be anyone we'd miss. I cut to 27. I got rid of a lot of chaff and stopped when I got to those guys. Of the 27 I kept, those are the bottom 4 IMO and a better team probably wouldn't have a spot for Free or Hopkins. Cerda and Vellojin maybe.

I think the Reds have made it pretty clear they won’t be spending extravagantly in 2023. So keeping and pruning players on the 40 man roster will be done pretty conservatively.

Like so many, Anderson is one of those guys you invite to Spring Training, pitches well, and you still hope he doesn't make the club.
