Castillo traded to the Mariners, Part II

There's just no way he would have signed a contract like that with the REDS.

    No way.

Nor would the REDS would have ever offered it, not with the state of the rest of the system as it is right now. They couldn't fill the pipeline fast enough (in their eyes with the way they do things) to take advantage of a contract like that, at least not in it's first three years.

That said, if I was the Owner of the REDS and Castillo was willing to sign that contract with us, I'd jump for joy. The next thing that would happen would be a mandate to Krall to shift the balance of talent in the system from hitting to pitching (those who make bats miss) and from the lower minor league levels to AA, AAA and the Major League levels. That's a tall task, but signing Castillo to that contract would be wasted if that task wasn't accomplished quickly, within the next 15 months.

I thought and still think that the Reds got a good return for Castillo but I am disgusted by the thought that the Reds did not make an offer similar or better than this in an attempt to wrap him up and by the thought that Castillo's folks would have indicated he would sign for this and the Reds did not pursue it. We don't know at this point what sort of effort was made to extend him during that last week and part of me hopes we never do. Those are probably some details my fandom may not survive.

My guess is the Reds probably offered something like 3 years, $50 Million. Just a guess.
All my posts are my opinion - just like yours are. If I forget to state it and you're too dense to see the obvious, look here!

If they had made a serious offer, that number would have leaked, so I’m guessing you’re in the ballpark.

The Reds paid Moose 20 million plus, have to think they’d value a pitcher in that realm.

The Pirates are cheap, look at their history, the Reds look spendy comparatively

    How does this keep happening?
    I'm not a system player. I am a system.

The three years part seems right, but probably closer to the yearly salary that he got from the Mariners. The Reds have made it clear they are staying away from long term commitments to any player.

There was a time when the richest people in America lived in Pittsburgh.

There are some unbelievably rich people living in Cincinnati, so I don't understand the cheapness. Guess that's how you get rich.

[Phil ] Castellini celebrated the team's farm system and noted the team had promising prospects who would one day be great Reds -- and then joke then they'd be ex-Reds, saying "of course we're going to lose them". #SellTheTeamBob
