Re: Castillo traded to the Mariners, Part II

i know it looks like a somewhat team-friendly contract for the mariners now, however i personally would not have signed castillo to a 5-year, $108M deal. why? two major reasons:

    1. he has a history of arm problems. even *this season* he missed the first full month of the season.

    2. he will be on the wrong side of 30 when next season begins.

if the reds would have signed him to that deal and his arm blew out, homer bailey style, what would many of us have been saying? "reds never learn their lesson. can't give out $100M contracts when you're a small market team, especially to guys on the wrong side of 30."

even if castillo stays healthy (huge IF) during his time with the mariners, it's reasonable to assume his production will decline as he ages. by the time he's 34, that contract could look like an abyss for the mariners.

No the lesson would be to stop hamstringing yourself unnecessarily as a """"small market team""""

Castillo has been very reliable in IP over his career. If he’s getting docked for “arm problems” I can’t imagine the penalty you place on other guys.

You are right in that there is risk due to his age, but that 108 M contract should be not terribly hard to live up to, short of catastrophic injury - remember the M’s baked a wise TJ clause into the deal.

And he gives the M’s, a contending team, a bona fide playoff arm. That’s worth something.

Re: Castillo traded to the Mariners, Part II

The reason to sign a player like Castillo is not to get good value for the money spent. The reason is that you think it will help you win a championship.

Due to their respective situations, odds are significantly higher that Castillo will help the Mariners win a championship than would help the Reds win a championship. It makes sense for a team like the Mariners to sign him to a long term deal, while it does not make the same sense for the Reds to.

What pitcher does not have a history of arm problems though?

Sure. The post in reference though pointed to the M’s not getting the value they wanted out of the deal so that’s the perspective I took. And as mentioned, he gives them a playoff arm, which is exactly what they need.

Burger Chef was sold to General Foods Corporation in 1968. They started a Fun Meal for kids in the early 70’s and sued McDonalds, when they started serving Happy Meals, but lost their case in court.

General Foods would divest themselves of their ownership in Burger Chef, by selling the company to Imasco, a Canadian company which also owned the Hardee’s chain of fast food restaurants.

There may no longer be any Burger Chef’s in operation, but will always have the memory of the store in Alexandria, Louisiana too many years ago to remember.

Burger Chef no longer exists, but their competitor McDonalds is still going strong with over 34,000 stores operating worldwide with 1.7 million employees.

McDonalds may have won the burger wars, but they can’t take the memories away from Burger Chef fans.

As Gene Tenace or Goose Gossage said To take a jab at Ray Kroc. McDonalds is good at poisoning people with their food.

That movie with Michael Keaton playing Ray Kroc was good at showing how a lot of business tycoons are great at stealing other peoples work but they are better at being A holes when it comes to business.

The best parts were they greeted you with “howdy partner” and said “happy trails” when you left.

When under the influence of a popular early 70’s substance, this was the funniest thing ever.
