    2023 Arizona Fall League

Tonight was the first game. the Glendale Desert Dogs lost to the Javelinas, 5-3.

Sam Benschoter was pretty sharp. He came in for the 6th and 7th innings and didn't allow a run. 1 H. 2K. Goose eggs elsewhere.

Matt McLain, playing SS, continued his odd season with an 0-3, two BB night.

Rece Hinds, playing RF, went 1-4 with a double.

Noelvi Marte, playing 3B, had a single in five ABs.

Marte hit a HR and Hinds hit his second double in as many games, but Christian Roa spit the bit, giving up 5 ER and 6 R total in the first inning.

    Woof.

I guess I didn't realize how big Marte really is. And he's got room still to grow.

If he does move to 3B, he should be able to add some muscle.

It's interesting, to me, that McLain continues to play SS.

Despite the emergence of EDLC, McLain hasn't been moved.

    I'm curious as to why.

Reds have been slow to move guys off shortstop. I’m guessing they’re concerned about middle infield. Going forward not sure India, Farmer or Barrero is a lock to be in the middle infield. No-shift rule, and all. Could easily see McClain in a middle infield spot, though perhaps second rather than short.

And he's played 2B in AA, of course. Okay, that does make sense.

    Re: 2023 Arizona Fall League

Sam Benscoter started yesterday and gave up 3 H and 1 BB in 3 IP of shutout baseball. Only three of the 11 pitchers didn't give up a run in a 13-11 game. (The wind must have been blowing out.) McLain went 0-4 with two BBs and a SB. Rece Hinds, continuing his hot Arizona, had his first HR and stole his first base. His OPS is 1.109. Both Gozzo and Timpanelli pitched and struggled greatly. (Timpanelli's poor numbers can partially be laid at the feet of a costly error by Martin.) Marte did not play.

Benschoter could be an interesting guy. He's very old, even for the AFL (24), but looks like he might end up a bullpen depth piece, perhaps more. Nice find by Red area scouts.

Because that's where he very well may be on opening day.

Hinds with another HR last night, Grand Slam this time. Dude is on fire.

I tried to embed the Tweet from RedsontheRise, but I failed. I'll let Icehole3 do it.

Hinds is 24th in the AFL in SLG. His OPS is 35th. He leads the league in strikeouts. Not sure I agree with on fire, though nice production of late. AFL seems on an offensive tear generally, it’s early, let’s see how things develop.

If I remember right, his ceiling when he drafted was Giancarlo Stanton. That would be a great development
