Where to find AUTHENTIC UNOPENED boxes of old baseball cards from 1987 and older?

I bought two boxes from baseballxchange about six months ago, and was generally disappointed. 1986 Topps and 1987 Donruss. The older boxes really seemed to jump in value, but I couldn't shake the feeling that those boxes had been opened and resealed.

They often are. You really need to get them from an extremely reputable dealer.

The '86 Topps, for example, you don't even have to open the packages because you can see through them and identify the bottom card. Because they were always loaded in sequence, you know what the remaining cards are. It's easy to remove the good packs.

Some of the boxes will have factory seals on them to limit tampering.

Do you happen to know of any local dealers who aren't going to burn me?

I would strongly advise against it.

There's just no traceability or accountability with packs from the 1980s. Even if you buy a whole box of boxes and the whole big outer box is sealed, you have no way of knowing when or who sealed it.

Agreed. And dealers were even opening and re-sealing packs in the 80's (see: Donruss, 1984). Bought two packs of those from a dealer selling them for $12 each during a card show back then, opened them and found a small bit of vasoline (really?) used in an amateur attempt to reseal them. So who knows what the history of any wax box is at this point. The mid-to-late 1980's baseball stuff is cheap enough that the best bet is to purchase factory sets. Much more difficult to tamper with the shrink wrap for the "blocks" where the key rookies are located.

And if someone could please buy me a 1986 Fleer NBA basketball sealed box, I'd appreciate it. Thanksomuch!

Guys I know this sounds silly, but for me the magic was opening up packs out a box not knowing what I could get. To buy a set sort of ruins that for me. I do understand what you mean by making sure nothing has been tapered with.

I'll see if he's still there (I was a dealer in '86/'87), but there was a place on 122nd and Glisan in Portland that was Nationally recognized as honest and I can vouch for him that he was. At this point, it would be his sons running it if they are still doing business, which I assume they are, but I'll look it up.

I handled the baseball card side of a business, Old West Coin Shop, out of Vancouver, WA. We also specialized in glass bottles and stamps, and, of course, coins.

This is it. I called them, got a voice mail saying that they no longer have a retail outlet, which I would have been surprised if they had in the craphole that is the City of Portland.

But, here's their website with their history of excellence listed:

You'll have to speak to them about getting boxes of unopened (factory sealed, if possible, but not tampered with) as I looked at their ebay, and they had only two boxed sets. I remember when they used to have 1000's of unopened boxes. That's not where the money is.
