    Re: Reds post-season transactions 2022-23

I predict Bob and Phil will unveil a large chart at Redsfest in which it gives the day of the week and the Reds owner that is responsible for feeding balls into the pitching machine that day. Taking a page from the Marge Schott book, Phil will say "why do we need all these coaches if I could do that?"
    Where we gonna go?

That's a load of crap. You should know that they have minions for those tasks.

    Bobby Nightengale

GM Nick Krall says the Reds have “a little payroll flexibility,” and the big-league coaching staff should be finalized next week.

The Reds have many positions where they could use an upgrade but don't expect much of it to come through free agency.

Anyone expecting payroll to be close to what it was at the start of 2022 be prepared to be disappointed.

Reds acquire Nick Solak from Rangers for cash considerations, plays IF and OF, had a good year in 2019.

Listed as an OF on Reds forty man roster, which is now full at 40.

I like the Solak pick up. Good MiLB numbers, former fringe top-100 type entering his prime years. Should be a useful utility player.

Nick Solak is actually... a pretty solid reserve 2B. Doesn't look like his defense has been very good anywhere else on the diamond, but he does project to be solidly above replacement level going forward and is still 27, which is great for a player acquired for cash considerations...

Haven't been aware of Solak at all till now but he's got decent splits against LHP: .807 in 2022, .791 career. Looks like sensible platoon option.

I liked Solak in the NYY system and initially with the Rangers but his career quickly took a Senzel like turn. Their profiles are pretty similar these days, wonder if Solak could be his replacement.
“I don’t care,” Votto said of passing his friend and former teammate. “He’s in the past. Bye-bye, Jay.”

GM Nick Krall: Reds have some payroll flexibility

Despite the Reds’ situation as a rebuilding club, general manager Nick Krall has remained engaged in talks about potential moves for this offseason this week during the annual GM Meetings in Las Vegas.

Without specifying a payroll figure for 2023, Krall said there was some financial flexibility to make additions that could improve the roster.

“We’re pretty much where we are. We’ve got a range, but we’re trying to figure out how we can make this team the best we can,” Krall said. “We’re talking to every team and agents and trying to figure out what our options are.”

Where do the Reds need to upgrade? There are several spots, including the outfield, bullpen and rotation, but Krall did not list a top priority.

“We struggled across the board and lost 100 games,” he said. “We need to make sure we’re doing everything we can to make this team better, whether it’s incrementally or if we can make a larger move -- to figure out what that is. We’re just trying to figure out how to get better, one day at a time.”

Solak's a 100 point OPS better lifetime against LHP than Senzel. Possible to platoon him in a way that doesn't work for Senzel.

Solak could be next year's Drury. Bat-first utility IF, not a great defender, could find extra juice in GAB.

    I don't hate it.

Solak’s lifetime numbers are dramatically influenced by 2019 and, against lefties, have been up and down over the years.

Not debating the point about Senzel, just Solak has had good years and bad years against LHP.

I don’t make a habit of rooting for Louisville Cardinals but I’ll make an exception. Hope he does well for us
