Gaylord Perry Passes Away
https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2022/...sses-away.htmlHall of Famer Gaylord Perry has passed away, according to multiple reports. He was 84 years old.
Perry made his MLB debut with the Giants in 1962 and wound up sticking around the majors through 1983, getting into 22 different seasons with eight different ball clubs. Perry gained a reputation around the league for his use of a spitball, leading to frequent suspicion from opposing teams and inspection from umpires.
Regardless, Perry went on to rack up numerous accolades in his career, making the All-Star team in 1966, 1970, 1972, 1974 and 1979. He pitched a no-hitter against the Cardinals in 1968. He lead the league in wins in 1970, 1972 and 1978 and also won the Cy Young in the latter two of those seasons

84 years of age... The spitball king has passed away...RIP
RIP Gaylord Perry, a true legend.
Perry pitched 22 years(62-83),from 1966-1978 he started 485 games, completed 263 of them and appeared in 3837 innings.
How much has pitching in MLB changed since Perry was playing?
Well if you took Lance Lynn and Matt Cain and combined them together you get 24 years 3788 IP, 616 GS and only 19 CG.
Baseball is a weird game
Perry's 5350 IP is third for players in the integration era, only 36 behind Nolan Ryan and 54 behind Phil Niekro.
Amazing career

RIP Gaylord Perry
Here he is talking about how in '64, SFGiants manager Alvin Dark said that there'd be a man on the Moon before he hit a HR.
In '69, just a 1/2 hr. after Apollo 11 landed on the Moon, Perry hit his first HR!

I once searched the streets of downtown Baltimore in vain on a weekend afternoon for a tub of Vaseline in the hope I could get Gaylord Perry to sign it.
I'm not a system player. I am a system.

The club finally signs a true ace to headline the rotation. Gaylord Perry is a Hall-of-Famer, a 300-game winner (314), a two-time Cy Young Award winner, and a five-time All-Star who pitched 22 years for eight clubs. He immediately goes into the #1 spot in the pitching rotation, and gives the '22 club a starter who can hold his own with anyone on the 2020 or '21 pitching staffs. Perry's presence also improves the starting pitching depth, as he lengthens the rotation by moving Joel Horlen, Ralph Terry, Dick Ellsworth, and Odalis Perez each down one spot. (When Horlen, Terry, and Ellsworth are your 2nd, 3rd, and 4th starters instead of your top three, you have a much better rotation!) Additionally, John Ellis -- who was Perry's teammate from 1973 to 1975 with the Indians, and 1976, '77, and '80 with the Rangers -- will serve as his personal catcher, which allows the club to rest John Stearns more regularly.
To make room for Perry on the 25-man active roster, the club options RHP Dave Wickersham to AAA. Wickersham improves the starting depth at AAA, and is also an option to be recalled for long relief duty if necessary. To clear a spot on the 40-man roster, the club designates RHP Fred Lasher for assignment.

I know this isn't a major league player, but he was part of an historical event. I figured it didn't warrant its own thread.
The then 19 year old fan who caught Roger Maris' 61st home run in 1961 passed away recently. Sal Durante was his name.
