The 2023 club is very busy today, signing a right-handed starting pitcher and a left-handed hitting catcher, and making a total of seven transactions. Roger Craig is a 12-year veteran of five NL clubs (including one season with the Reds), and he is experienced as both a starter and reliever. (Craig made 186 starts snd 182 relief appearances in his career.) Craig is the archetype of a journeyman innings-eater. Craig also had a successful career as a manager for the Giants in the late 80's and early 90's. Craig will be installed into the rotation as the #3 starter behind lefties Vida Blue and Gary Peters, and ahead of RHP Dave Frost. LHP Brian Dubois, who was primarily a starter in his brief career, will move to the bullpen to give the club a second left-handed reliever. To make room for Craig on the 25-man active roster, the club options RHP Roger Hambright to AAA. The club also signs C John Sullivan as additional catching depth, and options him to AAA as well. Sullivan is not much of a hitter, but he is a solid worker behind the plate. To make room for Craig and Sullivan on the 40-man roster, the club designates RHP Larry Foster and 1B Bill Davis for assignment. In a separate transaction, the club announces that RHP Paul Hinrichs has accepted outright assignment to the minors.

No fan of Roger Craig. Hated what he did to pitchers' careers.

The 2023 club continues to upgrade the rotation by signing its second veteran right-hander in as many days. Bobby Bolin is a 13-year major-league veteran, having played for three clubs during his career -- though he is best-known as a Giant. Bolin has extensive experience as both a starter and reliever, and will be penciled into the rotation as the #3 starter. To make room for Bolin on the 25-man active roster, the club options RHP Fred Klages to AAA, where he will continue to start at the top of the AAA rotation. To clear space on the 40-man roster, the club designates RHP Vern Holtgrave for assignment. Holtgrave becomes the second pitcher in as many days to be DFA'ed with only one career appearance.

Baldschun may be best known as one of the three players the Reds got back in the Frank Robinson trade. He was a pretty decent reliever for the Phillies for a short time. RIP Jack Baldshun.

I remember Jack Baldschun as the pitcher I hated to see come into the game. Looking at his stats, he had some pretty good years before coming to Cincy. RIP.
All my posts are my opinion - just like yours are. If I forget to state it and you're too dense to see the obvious, look here!

The 2023 club upgrades the bullpen by signing a veteran right-handed reliever. Jack Baldschun is vilified in these parts for being one of the principals coming from the Orioles in the Frank Robinson trade, but in reality he had been a very effective reliever for the Phillies the previous five seasons. (Baldschun was acquired by the Orioles via trade with the Phillies on 12/6/1965, and then traded to the Reds in the infamous Robinson trade only three days later.) Baldschun will serve as the primary setup man in the bullpen. He also has some closing experience, and will back up Bill Campbell as the primary closer. To make room for Baldschun on the 25-man active roster, the club options LHP Brian Dubois to AAA. Dubois, who has been primarily a starting pitcher in his career until he recently moved to the bullpen, will go to AAA and pitch in their rotation. To clear a spot on the 40-man roster for Baldschun, the club designates LHP Carl Duser for assignment. In a separate transaction, the club announces that 1B Fred Marolewski and 1B/OF Cotton Nash have both cleared waivers and accepted outright assignment to the minors. Nash has also been given permission to explore opportunities in professional basketball.

I hope folks don't mind my occasional sharing of non-MLB baseball related folks. Here's a local connection, a fellow parishioner of ours. My wife texted me a bit ago and said "you need to read Bubs' obituary." Here is, James "Bubs" Kindt, the founder of the Storm Club baseball in 1968. He coached until 2011. I can't find a list of the team's alumni. RIP, Bubs.

The 2023 club signs a left-handed relief pitcher with major control issues to a minor-league contract to add to the organizational depth.
