The club signs an athletic switch-hitting outfielder with power and speed who can play all three OF spots. Fred Valentine was the QB at Tennessee A&I (now Tennessee State) in the 50's, and was later signed by the Orioles. He had his best season in 1966 with the Senators, when he hit .276 with 16 HR's, 59 RBI's, and 22 SB's. Valentine will be optioned to AAA, where he will join Jeremy Giambi, David Green, and Gerald Williams in providing quality OF depth. To make room for Valentine on the 40-man roster, the club designates OF Don Dillard for assignment. In a separate transaction, the club announces that RHP Tommy Boggs has cleared waivers and accepted outright assignment to the minors.
Eric Stratton, Rush Chairman. Damn glad to meet ya.

The club announces that star SS Maury Wills has been named as player/manager. Wills, who managed the Mariners in 1980 and '81, was the only former MLB manager to die in 2022.

The club also makes its final player moves by signing right-handed starting pitcher Stefan Wever to a minor-league contract for organizational depth, and announcing that SS/2B Jerry Snyder, OF Don Dillard, and OF Leo Posada have all cleared waivers and accepted outright assignment to the minors.

Man another one from when I first starting being a fan. Colbert was about the only good player on those early Padre teams. IIRC, he had good power and was someone to be feared at the plate. RIP Nate Colbert.

Looks like Colbert had 4 or 5 really good seasons with the Padres and then just fell off the table.

Doug Radar wasn't anything special to look at either. IIRC, he was called The Rooster, for good reason too.

I remember those cards. Might actually have one or two.

If he had played now, he'd have signed one of those multi-year huge dollar contracts and the team that signed him would have regretted it after he fell off that cliff.

    Bill "Soup" Campbell Passes Away
    January 6, 2023

Longtime major league reliever Bill "Soup" Campbell passed away today after a battle with cancer, according to multiple reports. He was 74 years old.

A native of Highland Park, Michigan, Campbell began his professional baseball career with the Twins after a military stint in Vietnam. The war delayed his entry into pro ball until he was 22 years old, but the 6’3″ righty reached the majors within two seasons. A starting pitcher in the minors, Campbell broke into the big leagues as a reliever with Minnesota during the 1973 season.

Campbell played 15 seasons in the major leagues with 7 teams, and his most notable years were from 1977 through 1981 with the Red Sox.

One of the first of the Major League players to take advantage of free agency, he also played for the Minnesota Twins, Chicago Cubs, Philadelphia Phillies, St. Louis Cardinals, Detroit Tigers and Montreal Expos.

“Soup” led the AL in saves in 1977 and was a solid reliever for a long time. Plus, look at that head of hair. This will always be my image of Campbell, since 1981 was the first year I really ramped up my card collecting.

Board Moderators may, at their discretion and judgment, delete and/or edit any messages that violate any of the following guidelines: 1. Explicit references to alleged illegal or unlawful acts. 2. Graphic sexual descriptions. 3. Racial or ethnic slurs. 4. Use of edgy language (including masked profanity). 5. Direct personal attacks, flames, fights, trolling, baiting, name-calling, general nuisance, excessive player criticism or anything along those lines. 6. Posting spam. 7. Each person may have only one user account. It is fine to be critical here - that's what this board is for. But let's not beat a subject or a player to death, please.

Thank you, and most importantly, enjoy yourselves!
