    Re: Tom Browning Found Dead

Shared a cab with him once. Both of our cars got towed from a UC game and we were going to the towing garage that had them. He talked mostly to my 10 yr old daughter.

    RIP Tom.

Blood was everywhere, he was down on the ground for what seemed like forever. I thought for sure he was out of the game. But Browning had the team doctor sew up his lip right at home plate, and stayed in the game a few more innings. It was like something out of an old paperback baseball book.
A rugged guy who gave his all. I was in the ballpark in San Diego when he broke his arm throwing a pitch. If there had been a way to tape up his broken pitching arm, I'm sure he would have continued.

    Re: Tom Browning Found Dead

My enduring memory of Tom Browning is hitters furious at themselves and shaking their heads on the way back to the dugout because they couldn't hit him. He was like a Deadball Era throwback, a guy who learned something about pitching the rest of the world forgot.

    Re: Tom Browning Found Dead

I remember when the Carolina Mudcats became the AA affiliate of Cincy. The Reds had named Browning the pitching coach the first year of the affiliation. I was really excited about that decision. Unfortunately, circumstances changed and the Reds opted to change the pitching coach assignment in Carolina prior to the start of the season. I was really bummed about that.

Really disappointed to hear of his passing.

    Re: Tom Browning Found Dead

If there was ever a true Cincinnati Red, it was Tom Browning (pitcher version of Pete Rose). The guy was blue collar, tough as nails, hated losing, would befriend anyone, was funny, and could drink 42 Bud Lights on non-game days….lol. He was awesome and I’m so lucky to have chatted with him a few times.

Another vestige of my youth gone. Everyone talking about he's most remembered for. I remember him being the most consistent Reds pitcher for almost 10 years. RIP Tom.

I’ve got an autographed copy of his book somewhere.

It’s a good read but I remember it being like an everyman with no writing background wrote it. That’s Tom.

Somewhere the Castellini’s are pissed because they can’t host a 35th Anniversary Weekend of the perfecto with Tom in attendance.

#not too soon - that’s a shot at the Castellinis

He was the only decent SP the Reds minor leagues developed in something like 10 years.

    Re: Tom Browning Found Dead

“He was just a wonderful person. He was as beloved a Cincinnati Red as there’s been in the city,” said Butcher, the Reds’ longtime vice president of media relations. “Everybody who’d ever met him just loved the guy. He was fun. I guess that’s the word — he was fun.”

“I would go on our winter caravan with him and he was just — we’d be on the bus for hours and the stories he would tell were just spectacularly funny,” Butcher said. “You could tell his teammates loved him. I mean, when he was around our other Hall of Famers and around his old teammates, you could just tell they just adored the guy.”
