Hang on. McGarry’s age 21 college season was 2020 and spoiled by Covid. How is he now a “journeyman?” Should he have advanced further in just two minor league seasons? I get it - there are profound issues with BB/K, but the Reds organization named him their “hitter of the year.” I don’t think they regard him as organizational roster fodder.

Mth123 keeps referring to the collective wisdom of baseball. But he keeps referring to US players as getting the benefit of the wisdom, while the players he mistrusts are all international prospects that are way less experienced than US players at the same age.

Seems useful to note that 2 of the four top OPS in MLB are international players and three of the top six ERAs belonged to international players.

That was his age 22 season.

In his age 23 season, he fell flat on his face in A+.

Hit well last season, yes, but he was 24 and started it in A+. He’s limited defensively and has BB/K issues. Basically has to hit 35+ home runs to be a valuable big leaguer…

    Really?

They started him out in High A ball as a 24-year-old despite relatively little in AA. They drafted a 1B (Ruben Ibarra) the season after they acquired him as highly as they've drafted a 1B in more than a decade. They drafted another one (Sal Stewart) this season. They traded for another one (CES) too. It's great that he hit a lot of dingers and kept his average up. Really, more props to him. But assuming the Reds think about their own "hitter of the year" as a developmental marker seems odd. (MVP of an entire league is in a different stratosphere, of course. 18 teams, 350+ players. Different teams' prospects.)

No, do the math. That was his age 21 college season. His 22nd birthday was May 11, 2020 - the college season was already over.

The standard used for assigning age to a season is June 1st. If you look at his page on BR or FG you'll see that listed as his age 22 season.
