I’m very happy about the Casali deal, and DFAing Moose is the right move.

Casali’s deal is for $2.5M and a $750K buy out for 2024.

I applauded the Reds for trying with the Moose signing, but I always thought it made no sense. Suarez was at third and Votto at first. As he aged he wasn't a going to be much of a second baseman.

Reds cut Mike Moustakas after Curt Casali returns on a one-year contract
continue reading:
Mike Moustakas, who signed the largest free agent deal in Cincinnati Reds history, was designated for assignment Thursday with one year and $22 million remaining in his contract Thursday.
The Reds needed to create a roster spot on the 40-man roster after signing catcher Curt Casali to a one-year contract with a mutual option for the 2024 season.
The Reds tried to trade Moustakas for more than a year to shed his guaranteed salary, but didn't find any takers before designating him for assignment. Following Thursday's move, the Reds have a week to trade him, which is unlikely when he's owed $22 million, or release him.
Casali's signing gives the Reds two veteran catchers to work behind Tyler Stephenson, who was limited to 50 games last year because of multiple injuries. Stephenson will likely see a little more at first base and designated hitter if the Reds enter the season with three catchers on their 26-man roster, but a veteran catching group is important to the Reds with a rotation that could be one of the youngest in the league.
During Casali’s seasons with the Reds, he was well-liked among the pitching staff and hit well in a backup role. He’s never played more than 84 games in a season, but the Reds didn’t receive much value from their backup catchers after Stephenson went down with his injury last season

Fully prepared to see Chocolate Mousse reinvigorated in St Louis. I don’t care. He was abysmal. Total albatross. No reflection on him personally - seems like a great guy - but I’m thrilled he’s gone.
A Casali is fine. They were gonna have to get one.

Moose deal just epically bad lmao
What would you say.....ya do here?
Don’t understand the rush to dump Moose. They can DFA him any time they want and it’s a long time till next spring. You never know if the market will change. This just guarantees a $22M loss.

C.Trent, again, is wrong on what that phrase means. I also don’t trust him on what the entire quote from Krall was. CTrent has not been a reliable source for years.
That said, even if the Reds don’t make any big signings, they likely will add around another $5-10M just on minor league signings with around $1-2M guaranteed if the player makes the team. We will see quite a few of those, especially in the pen. I don’t bet, but I would bet big that the opening day payroll will be north of $81M.
