Homer’s bad contract likely was the cause of the 2015 tear down. Which is one reason why I am hesitant for the Reds to make any more big signings. The ownership doesn’t have the stomach for them.

Homer was the wrong guy to go with. They should have thrown that money at Cueto and traded Homer. I always thought that.

    I do.

I’m not an expert on baseball markets but I’m firmly bearish on the demand for slow, non-contributing, oft-injured over-the-hill players on awful contracts. No such thing as a sure thing, but I feel pretty good about my position.

Don't get me wrong, I am not advocating that they should have, but I do think its telling they elected to do this now vs letting some of the flotsam we have drift away. I can't imagine the Reds were happy with his lack of conditioning, beyond just performance. Even Shogo got time in the spring to make them change their mind and that was for far less.

Glad that Casali is back though.
This is where I’m at. If this was some lesser schmuck, I wouldn’t think twice about DFAing him. But you’ve invested $22M in the guy. If I were GM and I had to justify this release, I’d better be damn well sure he’s cooked as many of you have said. Because I know I’m admitting I made a huge mistake signing him and I better not compound it with making another one.

But I don’t totally disagree with releasing him and this isn’t a ditch I want to die in. Best of luck to Moose.

Wasn't it Williams that signed him? That's the line I take "it was the other guy".

The GM who is releasing him is not the one who signed him, but the ownership group who approved his release is the one that approved his signing, so this should not reflect poorly on Krall. (Should is not the same as will, I admit.)

I think some of the fan base worries just as much as ownership over big contracts.

    Ok, good point.

I’m just frustrated with the Reds like probably everyone else. They seem to have a knack for wrong moves. Let’s hope this is a right one.

If Moose had some out of this world recovery to hit like 2017-19 it will not be because of Reds incompetence or something they did wrong.

    Takeaways.

Very surprised they dropped Moose with Reds eating full salary. I never would have predicted it, as some did.

Stephenson is going to catch fewer games. They didn’t take on two backup catchers to just sit there.

The two moves are related since TSteve will be DHing fairly often, Moose’s expected role.

Krall hinted at both these moves with some of his earlier comments. Said he was thinking about a third catcher. Was kind of non-commital about Moustakas.

Im wondering if his comment about a getting creative type deal is forshawdowing of a trade.

    Boom!

I said it in another thread, but if there were four OF’s on the market wanting $20 million, the Reds would end up with the least productive one of the bunch. That’s a direct indictment of the Reds talent evaluation.

Reds Cut Bait With Mike Moustakas
Mike Moustakas’ tenure with the Cincinnati Reds is officially over. Moustakas, who has one year left on his contract and is owed $22 million, was designated for assignment on Thursday, according to Bobby Nightengale of the Cincinnati Enquirer.

Reds general manager Nick Krall said the following in an explanation of the move, “”We had to look at it more for what our team is next year,” Reds General Manager Nick Krall said Thursday.

“We’re already paying him. Who is the best fit for our team moving forward. It was a tough decision. They are all tough decisions. They are decisions made about good people and they are career-altering decisions for them. I just think for us, we had to make sure we’re making the best decision for our organization.”

Cincinnati was rumored to be attempting to include Moustakas in trades for starting pitchers Luis Castillo and Tyler Mahle, though no deals materialized ahead of the deadline.

Now, the Reds, clearly in a rebuild, had no room on the roster for the aging Moustakas- and thus had to make this tough decision.

Cincinnati now has a week to trade him or release him.

It will be interesting to see if there is any sort of market for Moustakas
