    Redszone 2023 Top 40 prospects Poll: #29

Yerlin Confidan is in the rankings. Only 11 more to go. Replacing him in the poll is the ghost of Jackson Miller.

well now that Yerlin finally won one I don't know who to vote for. I guess I'll go Ivan Johnson, still think he might become a solid backup or second-division starter.
“I don’t care,” Votto said of passing his friend and former teammate. “He’s in the past. Bye-bye, Jay.”

If you like Julian Aguiar, you should like Javi Rivera.

I was torn between Callihan, Ivan J and Javi Rivera.

I went with Callihan; I still believe in his hit tool, even though it has rarely stood out in his time as a pro.

Still supporting McGarry here. Solid production at AA and will likely see his MLB debut this year with good start at Louisville. Callihan is next for me.

Voted for Hubbart. Alternating between Balcazar and him. If Hubbart stays healthy, he is going to pitch in the majors. He definitely knows how to pitch. He was FSU’s reliable second starter for two years with WHIP of 1.16 and 1.17. He has a great curveball that he can throw at different speeds in different parts of the count. His FB And CU are above average and he is honing a slider. This guy has thrown many 7+ innng starts, so we know he has encountered the 6th inning threshold and mastered it. We don’t know how all the reds A ball pitchers will react, because none are allowed to go past the 5th inning.

Hubbart is a good choice as well. I think he's got a nice swingman profile.

I see someone voted for Esmith Pineda. He was really good last season before getting hurt hope he can keep it up in Arizona next season.

To all the non-McGarry voters: we’ve gotta vote for Callihan next round if we want to keep him out of the top 30…

Pineda is definitely interesting to me, as is Carlos Sanchez (.355/ .506/ .442/ .948 line with 40 walks and 28 Ks in 182 PAs).

Those two, Ricardo Cabrera, P Khristian Guevera, Victor Acosta, Malvin Valdez, Sal Stewart (maybe), Cam Collier (maybe), Hector Rodriguez (after he gets healthy), P Ben Walmsley, and P Jose Montero are all interesting follows deep in the AZL. This would be a good season to get out to Arizona for Spring Training to look at the super young guys and get a feel for who's hitting the ball with authority and who's really hard to hit.

Of course, every year is a good year to get out to Spring Training to see the young guys.

Do you think Acosta starts in Arizona or Daytona? I’m leaning toward Arizona. Daytonas infield will be packed. I hate it that Rodriguez hit hurt. He was having a great season. I doubt Collier or Stewart start in Arizona.

Here is a list of interesting players from the DSL and AFL that I didn’t have in my top 30

    Cristian Galindo DSL
    11 G, 28 IP, 9 BB, 42 SO, 2.25 ERA, 1.00 WHIP

    Lisnerkin Lantigua DSL

    Khristian Guevara DSL
    8 G, 20 IP, 3 BB, 22 SO, 3.60 ERA, 1.15 WHIP

    Jefferson Lopez ACL

Yeah, I want to get into this later as an entire discussion.

Right now, they've got a whole host of interesting enough prospects up the middle from Arizona through Louisville.

AAA has Siani, EDLC, and McLain. They could also have Rey (whom I like), Urbaez (whom I like more), and Ivan Johnson (whom I like most). They're not likely to get much playing time at 3B, due to CES. They might end up at DH. Rey might see lots of time in the OF-- which is probably better for him if he wants to make it as a major leaguer anyway. Urbaez should probably ask to play some OF-- particularly CF. Johnson should take his glove everywhere-- he's got wheels enough and arm enough to make himself an interesting low BA, good power utility guy.

AA has Torres, Marte, Hendrick and Cerda, the extra bats from the six above, not to mention Nick Quintana and Miguel Hernandez (who used to be interesting). There is an opening at 3B, though Quintana should have the inside track there. That leaves one extra IF bat and an extra OF. Hendrick and Cerda can both play corner OF, but Hinds is the RF. So the non-CF plays LF or DHs. Which cuts out at least one semi-interesting prospect every day.

Dayton has Allen, Arroyo, and Tyler Callihan. That seems set-- unless they want to move some of the extra bats down or Blake to CF. Which is likely. If Callihan hits like he's capable, he's already spent half a season in Dayton. That'd throw a big-time wrench here.

That leaves Daytona with Jorge, Ascanio, Acosta, Balcazar, Valdez, and Hector Rodriguez up the middle. That's untenable. The extra PAs won't come at 3B (because of Collier and Stewart) or DH (same reason). You've also got Minier to figure out-- he's still young enough to matter. Yerlin Confidan is probably going to be in RF, and they'll want Justin Boyd to play somewhere. He's got a great glove, so he's probably the third guy in that mix. That means the DH spot is going to be absolutely stuffed with hitters. (They might move the OF around a lot-- that's what I'd do.) If/ When Rodriguez gets back, he's going to need to play too. And none of that mentions the two college catchers they drafted last year high enough that they need look-sees or Jackson Miller, who I suspect, at this point, is an apparition. The Daytona team is chock full'o interesting guys and limited on spot. It'll be fun to watch what they do.

Something I did earlier. This isn’t exactly where I think everyone will end up. It’s where I think they ought to be if it was just based on what would be best for them. Yiu will see there are to many infielders in Daytona and to many starting pitchers in Dayton among other things.

Re: Redszone 2023 Top 40 prospects Poll: #29

The amount of talent 1-40 is pretty impressive. One guy who fell of a cliff last year that I haven't give up on yet is Jose Torres. Looking at his stats he really struggled vs LHP last year with a .620 OPS in 108 PA. I think a lot of these guys don't see much LHP until they move up in the minors. If he can learn to hit lefties better I think there's still something there with his defense and speed.
