Anyone recall January 1977 in Cincinnati?

I saw tomorrow has a high of 4 degrees in Cincinnati and wondered historically how that fares against other low temperatures.

Seems January of 77 was the king of cold weather. Minus 25 degrees Fahrenheit one day

Yep, remember it well. The river froze and we had all kinds of days off school

I didn't live in Cincinnati but I remember that winter well living in SEKY. That was the only time I saw the Cumberland River freeze. Horribly cold and snowy winter. I loved it for the fact that we missed three straight weeks of school because one snow after another would come for the month of January.

It was also an epic year for snow. Lake Erie completely froze over

One of the peak moments of that winter was the release of Animals, by Pink Floyd, which is cold and barren in ways that guitar rock was not usually back then. Matched the weather for sure

In the blizzard of '77, the cars were just lumps on the snow. And then later, tripping in 7-Eleven, the shelves were stretching out of control.

That was the year of the “Big Freeze” on the East Coast too. I was 8 years old and the Chesapeake Bay, which was essentially my back yard, froze over. It was the most surreal thing to see, so bizarre that it almost seemed like a dream.

I recall it. Insanely cold for a month, we had about a foot and a half of snow in our yard and 4 foot high piles next to the driveway. We turned the back driveway pad into a hockey rink. School was canceled for multiple days; I was 12 and it was the best winter I could have ever imagined at the time.

It was brutal. Brutal cold and brutal snow. Plus my first marriage was breaking up in real time in the middle of all that. Wheee!!! I’ve had better times.

Your school story sounds similar to January, 1994 in Cincinnati. There was an inch of ice then snow afterwards turning the city into a ice-skating rink. I was 18 at the time and we were out of school for 6 days in a row IIRC, probably a Cincinnati record. That said, there wasn’t a whole lot to do except sled-riding and video games because, apparently, we weren’t cool or smart enough to create own ice skating rink .

Those pockets of years in the late 70's, early 80's were probably the last years that you could do a rink in Ohio. It was like Michigan or Canada cold, for weeks, that's why you could sustain a rink. But I have not heard or seen a winter that was that full force or as long as that spell.

It was as I said brutal
