To me it's a matter of scarcity. Much, much easier to find that kind of hitting production at 1B than at C. He wants to keep catching and has changed equipment to address the concussions and collarbone. I'm on board with giving him "days off" at 1B and DH but would grant his wishes to remain primarily a C.

I think guys with Stephenson's hitting ability are pretty scarce on the 2022 Reds. I'd hate to sacrifice that to the gods for another 50 games or so of him being an average catcher.

Corey Kluber is still unsigned, eh? And Zack Greinke? We have to get someone.

    Kluber just signed with Boston.
“The guys we've had for the most part have been serviceable at this level.”

If he needs bubble wrap, trade him while he has some value

I thought the same thing. The additions of all of the other catchers likely means that he will see more time at 1b/DH. But it did cross my mind that they feel he’s injury prone and want to trade him while value is still there at the C position.

Bubble wrap? We’re gonna deal an excellent 25-year-old hitter because he can’t play catcher? Do we cut ties with Elly de la Cruz if he can’t stick at SS?

I don’t understand what the draw back is to playing our best hitter at a position that will make him more likely to stay healthy and in the lineup.

He can and does play catcher though. If you can get elite hitting catcher value for your above average hitting 1B, that's very appealing to me

Kluber, Eovaldi, and Jordan Lyles off the SP board and the Reds are still empty handed. Now down to about a handful of decent FA SP options left.

My gut is saying Wade Miley if it’s a FA. History here. Should be dirt cheap.

Ty Stephenson put up a 134 wRC+ last year in his limited play. That ranked 42 of all MLB hitters with at least 150 PA’s last year.

He’s a well above average hitter, no matter where he plays. The Reds need to keep as many above average hitters they can.

Not disagreeing there. The other transactions just made the thought cross my mind.

He did that on a .409 BAbip. Stephenson will have to hit more HR and likely draw more BB to maintain that level of production over a full season. It's entirely possible that he can as I think there's untapped in game power with him.

Sounds like a great argument for keeping him at C. Much cheaper/easier to find an above average hitter at 1B than at C

The Reds are having trouble fielding above average hitters at any position.
