Decisions like this are no-brainers. You have to question whether or not there isn't some financial incentive for not winning. What other reason could it be? If they have another terrible start, then any idea of trying to trade cheap assets for pricey vets is off the table.

I think that's the "best" 13 anyway until the kids start arriving. De LA Cruz, McLain, Encarnacion-Starnd, Siani and Marte can't arrive soon enough.
My confidence in Barrero’s offense is about as high as my confidence in Senzel’s health. And it’s lower than Senzel’s offense. I’m guessing Reynolds makes the team.

Nope. Barrero's shot comes with opening day. Healthy, full spring training and SS is wide open. He may be gone by Memorial Day, but my guess is he gets a full shot this spring. Last year at this time, he was the team's top prospect. They aren't giving up on him without an extended look IMO. Doesn't mean I'm optimistic, but he'll get 200 PAs while they wait for De La Cruz to move past his Super 2 date. If he hits, he may move to CF or 2B.

Newman is here if Barrero fails and De La Cruz stalls. No room for Reynolds unless more injuries.

Two years ago. (The seasons have a way of sneaking up on you.)

Barrero hasn't been the Reds' top prospect for anyone since Eric Longenhagen since mid-season 2021. His second (of three) poor showings at the MLB level dimmed his star. Last year, Fangraphs tabbed Hunter Greene and MLB pegged Nick Lodolo.

Other than that, I agree fully.

You're right. These tanking years are all a blur.

TBH, I loved stuff on a shingle while I was in the service. Still make it to this day.

Barrero should get no shot unless he earns it. He has a 650 ops in he earns it so far in Puerto Rico winter league he has hit like Senzel 650 ops. That league is like a ball

I'd normally agree with you, but he did have a good season in 2021 in AAA and was hurt last year and playing catch-up all year. There are others coming and there is no one else worth giving the PT to at this point, so I give him a shot in April in May and re-evaluate in June based on his performance and whether De La Cruz is ready. If he shows anything, he's an asset that can be traded, moved to another position or allow some one coming up behind him to move to another position. The Reds are very short on talent to fill the open positions. Not long ago he was the top prospect with a combo of Power and Speed to dream on. I don't write him off just yet. If he doesn't get that shot now, there may not be another opportunity.

I'd rather find out about Barrero once and for all than give those PAs to Newman or Reynolds. By Mid-season, there won't be room to give Barrero a shot. He has 2 months to claim the job or get pushed to the back-burner and become a completely worthless asset. .

Just to be a contrarian, the problem with giving Barrero an extended tryout is that if he doesn’t pan out, you’ve killed his worth on the market.

What market does he have right now? He might be a throw in on a bigger deal, but he’s not bringing in anything good at this point. Reds have literally nothing to lose by playing him.

Agree, Barrero has very little value on the trade market rn. I’d give him all the reps he can handle until Elly is up. I’d also consider him as a utility player who can backup CF/SS if Elly takes SS and runs with it.
