Part of the reason the NFL has gained so much in popularity is the parity in the league. The MLB seems to be losing any semblance of parity at a quick rate. It was already a regional sport for the most part, but if you are going to consistently have your contending teams spending 4-6X the amount the bottom teams spend people are going to stop caring.
I know our owners don't care to spend and will not come close to the spending thresholds of the top teams so what is the point? The Mets are almost at 3X the league average payroll.
There is virtually no chance we turnover this roster in a quick manner and make this team a winner. It's just a series of rebuilds over and over and if you aren't willing to spend in addition to getting lucky you will never beat the teams that are willing to spend. Maybe it's just apathy setting in, but the payroll separation seems to be getting worse and it is something they should be concerned with IMO.

When I say them I mean the group of owners that isn't willing to spend, should have clarified. Lucky for them a rising tide raises all boats... for now.
Banana Bob is seeing this play out in real time with these attendance numbers and all he has to do is act like they are trying and they can't do that.

The incentive is being a winner. I'd venture that Phil has never been a competitive athlete or even a competitive business person. He probably was an also ran in his college fraternity (I'd guess he got in because he's likely a legacy). And I think Phil's calling the shots at this point, and he's a loser every which way. Which is why the Reds are what they are. Hopefully the estate tax will help end our losing legacy at some future point.

I think having a committed ownership group would certainly improve things on the basis of movement and effort, but I don’t think it would lead to many more playoff appearances overall, despite it never being easier to make the postseason. I think what plagues the Reds is deeper, much deeper, than cheap suit Phil.

Lets say that the Reds increase payroll 100 million a year. How much will that increase their net profit?
