Athletics, Orioles, Pirates and Reds among lowest spenders in MLB

New York Mets owner Steve Cohen has one goal: To win a World Series. This is, somehow, a controversial stance in baseball.

Cohen didn't call out any teams or owners, but it's not hard to look up a list of MLB payrolls.

The Oakland Athletics are set to have the lowest payroll in baseball in 2023, with a projected $40.9 million payroll. The team is actively trying to leave Oakland, which may have influenced team owner John Fisher — who is worth roughly $2.5 billion — to not invest in the club.

The Baltimore Orioles are projected for the second-lowest payroll in 2023, coming in at $45 million.

Team owner Peter Angelos — worth roughly $2 billion — called out Cohen and the Mets when Angelos was asked about the Orioles' low payroll.

Angelos said he hoped to increase team payroll soon and that he would "Love to be sitting in New York with $300 million payrolls." The Orioles were in the wild-card hunt last season, but decided to sell off pieces at the trade deadline.

Last season, Cincinnati Reds president Phil Castellini, son of team owner Bob Castellini, drew criticism for telling fans, "Where are you going to go?" when asked about selling the team.

The Reds are projected to carry a payroll of $48.6 million in 2023, which ranks 26th in MLB.

The Athletics, Orioles and Reds all ranked in the bottom 10 in attendance in 2022, per ESPN.

Does one of those places start with an h end with an l and have an e and l in between?

The Reds payroll is only $48 million? That ain’t right is it? I thought it was still going to be on the 70s

I remember one time going out to the mound to talk with Bob Gibson. He told me to get back behind the batter, that the only thing I knew about pitching was that it was hard to hit.

Yeah, that’s a big mistake by the author. The Reds active payroll is $48M, but that is just the guaranteed contracts they have already committed to, which is only for 12 players. It does not include players that are not arbitration eligible, nor non-rosters signee’s who will get $1-2M each if they make the MLB team.

Add all of them together, the Reds opening day roster will be around $75-80M.

That's sad. Those were the four dominate teams of the 70's. Now they are in shambles because of their ownerships.

26 Man OD payroll will be about 60M$ (not including CBT benefits).

And that will definitely be a bottom 5 payroll.

I have the Reds 40 man roster at about 84 Million which includes $22 Million in dead money for Moose and an estimate for the guys not on the active roster (roughly $100K each). We know Vlad will be on the 60 day IL, so 27 guys will be making MLB money.
All my posts are my opinion - just like yours are. If I forget to state it and you're too dense to see the obvious, look here!

On the flip side those are four of the worst teams in the late 40's to 1960, two moved, one twice, the NL teams were mentioned as possible NYC transplants too. Each team was built through scouting, the draft and sticking with a brain trust long enough to create a team culture that churned out quality for two decades. Rickey in Pittsburgh, the Crosley group then DeWitt in Cincinnati, Finley in KC/Oakland and Paul Richards in Baltimore. They all were not there when the championships started, but they created a culture that persisted until free agency
