So our questions, after perusing the list, are as follows:

    1. Who's too high?

    2. Who's underrated?

    3. Who should have made the list?

    4. Who has no business being on this Top 40 list?

    5. Where are our blind spots (ie, what do we treasure more than we ought to)?

Thank you podgejeff for all your work on this thread. It was very well done this year. Fun to read and learn about some prospects I didn’t know much about.

I'm curious to know where our newest singing Alfredo Duno would rank on this list. From what I've read I would probably have him in the top 20.

I'd put him 17th ahead of Hendrick.

I'd put him in that neighborhood as well.

The key, to me, is the supposed upside. Not many of these guys have three "60" tools. Super high floor because he's a catcher too.

I'll bite on who should have made the list. Logan Tanner. Good defense and a strong arm should play well in MLB when the running game becomes more prominent. He should make a satisfactory backup catcher at the big league level, primary if he OPS 700. I think RZ sees him as a continuation of the Okey and Nelson overdrafts and that he will struggle to OPS 600. It's too soon to tell if this is the case. Cade Hunter is in the top 40 because he showed some offensive skills. Still, the Reds took Tanner several rounds before Hunter.

I catcher with a high offensive ceiling if pretty exciting. I’ll put him at #15 for now.

Re: RedsZone 2023 Top 40 Prospects

If Duno really has three tools at 60, that is the same as Elly de La Cruz. The only guy with that many in the system. Lack of track record deducts from him, but, even though I want to see guys actually do it, I'd put him at number 9 on this list. No one below that has really produced anything meaningful at a meaningful level either, so I go with the three 60 tools.

Re: RedsZone 2023 Top 40 Prospects

Duno would definitely be in the top 20. I'd have him ahead of Hendrick/Hinds, but then again, I'd have them both about ten spots lower. I also think that McGarry is too high (probably wouldn't have him on the list). I also think CES is too high, but I am rooting hard for him not to be.

When it comes to the catchers, Vellojin, Tanner, Hunter, Nelson and now Duno are all interesting in their own ways. All are probably deserving of recognition if we went to 50, Duno seems to have the highest ceiling though. Hunter and Tanner likely suffered from a split vote.

I wouldn’t have had Hendrick in my top 40. He has a 40% K rate. He has a long way to go to being a major leaguer. I also think Hinds is way to high. I probably would have had him 30-40. I would have had Hajjar around 25. Jay Allen and Tyler Callihan would have been a little lower Allen probably around 20, Callihan, im not sure would have been in my top 40. It would have been close.

Re: RedsZone 2023 Top 40 Prospects

I have also wondered about the K rates of several players. K rates are likely to increase when players see ML sliders and changeups. Do the Reds emphasize selling out for power in the low minors and using AAA to improve plate discipline? Hendrick, Hinds, Cerda, McGarry, even EDLC are likely to have a tough adjustment.
