Re: RedsZone's 2023 BBWAA HOF Ballot Vote

My feeling on Rolen pretty much mirrors what a lot of folks here have said. If you look at the numbers I guess you can make the case but I don’t think Ruth, Aaron, Cobb…Rolen. The problem I have is when you don’t keep it to the elite players and start letting in guys who we’re very good you have a very hard time justifying keeping other people out. For example if Rolen gets in due to being an elite defender with a good bat, how do you say Andruw Jones is not a HoF? I mean 10 Gold Gloves and a good hitter

The thing that routinely gets me is it seems to be the same types, especially among baseball writers/talking heads, who insist that no one plays the game the right way anymore and that complete players and good at-bats get lost in the shuffle these days, are the same people who then try to chuck complete players like Rolen, Larry Walker and Carlos Beltran under the bus. The thing they say they want, they don't value at all.
    I'm not a system player. I am a system.

The supposed standard for election to the Hall of Fame being "Ruth, Aaron, Cobb" and not "very good" players has not been the standard for 50 years. Rolen is one of the top ten third baseman in MLB history, and he was a far better player than third basemen Jimmy Collins, Freddie Lindstrom, Home Run Baker and George Kell, all of whom have been in the HOF for decades. If the standard was "Ruth, Aaron, Cobb," there would be maybe two dozen members of the HOF.

Re: RedsZone's 2023 BBWAA HOF Ballot Vote

Congrats to Rolen. He was one of the best 3rd basemen of his generation. He put up HOF worthy stats and is deserving of this recognition. His stats are in the link below. I am not opposed to these very good players making it into the HOF such as Rolen. Many players of his kind from the past have been largely forgotten because they were not not deemed worthy enough to be honored. In some ways that is a shame. Because they were big contributors to the game. I like the HOF being bigger and more inclusive as it has become. I think we all know there are different levels of HOF players. Ones like Ruth, Cobb, Mays and Aaron are at a different level. Ones like Rolen and Harold Baines are a small step down. Nothing wrong with honoring players of that kind, IMO.

I did not do a great job of articulating my point. I agree they have been letting in very good players for a long time and I have no issue with that necessarily. The point I guess I was trying to make is there is a pretty clear demarc as to who the elite first ballot guys are. When you get to the very good it gets a little murky as to why certain guys get in and other guys do not. In a lot of situations, shamefully, it’s a popularity contest
