    Re: Oscar nominations are out

I liked the vibe they were aiming for with the Batman but I think it could have been even darker and more pared down. But I understand that some of my complaints about it are baked into both the noir genre and the Batman mythos, so I mainly sorta shrugged my way through it. I did wonder to myself how kids and young adults today digest our 90s/Gen X nostalgia when they’re so far removed from it. Christian Bale’s Batman wasn’t steeped in 1970s nostalgia but maybe the Keaton/Kilmer/Clooney ones, which were campier and more stylized, had 60s influences? I haven’t seen them in 20 years.

Keaton Batman is far and away the best batman era.

I am assuming you are saying metaphorically dark? Because I couldn't see a thing in that movie. Also, the part where Catwoman starting railing on Bruce Wayne for having white privilege was very cringy. Also, the ending did nothing for me.

They always include cringey dialogue about hope, justice, etc. so I don’t mind them using that delivery method to talk a little about how Batman the character is a little behind the times. Better would have been to actually make a Batman movie that updates the character to 2023’s understanding of class and race and be a character kids today can have for the next 50 years.

Tár was far and away the best movie I saw. Probably the funniest movie too. Will never understand people who saw and didn’t like it.

This year was pretty meh. I'll try to see the nominated films but nothing makes me feel like I'm missing something by not seeing them.
    Where we gonna go?

Yeah my eyes rolled out of my head at that line, aside from that though I thought it was pretty solidly written, it was cool to get a more legitimately grounded version of the character for this one. I saw people describe Batman as being portrayed almost like a horror movie villain by people who saw it test screened, and I’d say that ended up being pretty true. It wasn’t anything mind blowing, but definitely a fun/cool movie. One of the few blockbusters in recent years that’s been tonally and atmospherically unique.

Keaton’s a top-5 actor of his generation by the way.

To do that properly, I think they have to kill Bruce Wayne. He's been on the job for close to a century and Gotham has failed to thrive under his "protection." A Batman that ends his story, confronts his complicated legacy and gives rise to a new Bat strikes me as the story that's waiting to be told.

    I’d watch that.

(I don’t follow the comics so no idea if they already did this in 1993 or something)

Banshees of Inisherin was pretty decent. A little formulaic in the concept and writing, but the acting was good. And it was damn funny.

Triangle of Sadness was terribly slow-developing but had a couple moments.

I have found that many people don’t want to see challenging movies or visual art. Tar is like cinematic red meat, so people that seek eye candy like top gun can’t digest it.
