Barnes has been optioned seven times and he ain’t released, does that mean anything to you, huh? Barnes ain’t meant to be released! The only thing that can DFA Barnes, is Barnes. (and the Red Sox)

New Red Sox Adam Duvall channeling Joey Votto’s advice as he prepares to take over center field

I’ve always taken pride in my defense,” Duvall said Wednesday. “It has always been the cornerstone of what I want to be seen as. When I was first coming up, I had (Joey Votto) tell me, ‘If you can play good defense every single day, they’ll keep you in the lineup. When you start messing around on defense and let your guard down a little bit and the next thing you know, you’re not hitting a little bit, they’ve got to find a switch for you.’ That stuck with me.

Astros hire Braves VP Dana Brown, who becomes MLB's only Black GM

The Houston Astros announced Thursday that they have hired Dana Brown, previously the Atlanta Braves' vice president of scouting, as their new general manager, ending a two-month search process after they parted ways with James Click.

With the promotion, Brown becomes the only Black general manager in MLB.

    re EDLC

He has the bat speed and coverage to make good contact with pitches out of the strike zone, but also has issues with pitches in the zone, especially fastballs in the upper half. That’s not unusual for a very young hitter who’s learned from experience that he can mash against almost anything, but it’s also not the ideal formula for major-league success, so he will have to tighten up his pitch selection going forward.
    ...

However, this kind of bat speed, power, and foot speed also means he could be a star at pretty much any position where he plays, as it’s easy 30-35 home run power and the potential for high BABIPs even if he strikes out a quarter of the time. And if at some point he makes a big move in his pitch selection and recognition, he might end up the best player in baseball.
    17. Cam Collier, 3B, Cincinnati Reds
The son of former Pirates outfielder Lou Collier, Cam projects to hit for average and for power thanks to a beautiful left-handed swing and exceptional bat speed. He’s short to the ball, with loose hands and plenty of wrist and hand strength to drive the ball to all fields. He has plus raw power now but doesn’t always get to it in games because he can drift forward over his front side, which fortunately isn’t that difficult to fix. He’s a former shortstop with a plus arm and should be no worse than an average defender at third, although some scouts voiced concerns in the spring that he’d end up too big for the position.
    49. Noelvi Marte, SS, Cincinnati
He’s still playing shortstop, but there’s no chance he’s staying there long term as he’s already gotten too big for the position and his footwork isn’t quick enough for it, but he has a plus arm and could end up an average defender at third if he maintains his conditioning. Marte filling out so much at age 20 does raise the concern he’s going to end up a corner outfielder, or that he’ll end up slowing down in his mid-20s, but his continued offensive performance also makes it much more likely he’s at least a valuable bench player — more floor, less ceiling, at least compared to a year ago. If he works on conditioning and moves to third base now to begin learning the position, he could still be an above-average regular with high OBPs and 20-ish homers a year.
    58. Edwin Arroyo, SS, Cincinnati
If his late-season fade was just fatigue, and he can add some strength to sustain his performance through an entire season, he’ll establish a clear floor for himself as a good utility player, with the upside still of a sometime All-Star who hits for high averages and saves 5-10 runs a year on defense at short.

MLB’s new uniform rules won’t prevent Red Sox from keeping Boston traditions

Major League Baseball is limiting teams to five uniform styles this year, but the Red Sox are reportedly receiving an exemption, and for good reason.

In an effort to streamline uniforms, Nike, the league’s official uniform provider since 2020, is implementing a “Four Plus One” plan: four sets of uniforms plus their City Connect set.

Several teams will have to eliminate one or more style; the Mariners have already cut their road greys and spring training powder blues.

Brendan Campbell of Blogging the Red Sox was first to report that the restrictions won’t prevent the Sox from some important local traditions. MassLive’s Chris Cotillo confirmed.

In addition to their home whites and reds, and road greys and navy blues, the Sox will wear their green alternates for St. Patrick’s day, which falls during spring training.

The club’s yellow-and-blue City Connect jerseys honor the Boston Marathon, but aren’t actually worn on Marathon Monday. For the last decade, they’ve worn the “B Strong” jerseys, and despite the new rule, will still wear them this year

Beginning this season, MLB is allowing teams to add a 4-inch-by-4-inch advertising patches to one jersey sleeve.

Kroger adds to Reds relationship with patch sponsorship

The logo of Kroger, which at more than 69 years is one of the Reds' longest-tenured sponsors, will grace the team’s uniform sleeves starting in spring training later this month.

Sources said Cincinnati-based Kroger, which was already paying the Reds more than $1 million annually, will be paying $5 million per annum to be the first non-apparel brand on the uniform of the Reds, which like to call themselves MLB’s oldest team.
