    Rolen to HOF

I'm sorry, it's really difficult for me to accept that Rolen is in the Hall at the same position as Brooks Robinson and Mike Schmidt. I guess when you eliminate enough PED users, the bar has to go lower. https://www.yahoo.com/sports/scott-r...232042342.html

I'd agree. Solid player/solid career but not a hall of famer.

Mike Mussina was the ultimate watered down hall of famer imo. Didn't even with a Cy Young and had just average stats in the Playoffs

My Hall of Fame of debut years 1995-2006:

SP- Halladay, Verlander, Lester, Greinke, Sabathia, Buehrle, Hudson, Santana, Oswalt
    RP- Rivera, Wagner
    C- Molina, Mauer
    1B- Pujols, Cabrera, Helton
    2B- Utley, Pedroia
    SS- Jeter, Rollins
    3B- Beltre, Rolen
OF- Guerrero, Ichiro, Holliday, Jones, Abreu, Beltran, Hunter
    DH- Ortiz

Does the world stop spinning if these 30 guys get in from these 12 debut years?

Mike Mussina finished top 10 in AL CY voting 9x, was a workhorse who even without the best stuff won games.

I can't stand the Yankees but that dude is a HOF'er.

Congratulations Scotty Rolen on being honored as one of baseball's "greats" when truly you really were only one of baseball's many "very goods".

    Re: Rolen to HOF

I am always amazed by the amount of hand-wringing over letting someone into the HOF in baseball compared to with other sports. No one complains over linemen going into the Football Hall of Fame. The Baseball hall was long ago watered down by Veteran's Committee admissions. Now we have stars kept out over PEDs or gambling whereas past era's transgressions were ignored. It is a museum. Let guys in and tell the story of the game and society. More guys the merrier.

this is not necessarily meant in response to the any post above but just the discussion over the years about who should be in/out, etc

    Re: Rolen to HOF

Average WAR of previous 15 third basemen to make HOF - 68.3

    Scott Rolen WAR - 70.1

Is he the greatest 3B ever? No.

But, is he a HOFer based on his peers at his position? Yes.

I'm Big Hall, so I'm more upset about Beltran and Helton not getting in than I am about Rolen.

Scott Rolen owns the third-highest GG total, winning eight awards the most is Brooks Robinson with 16. He though had an OPS+ of 105 but "only" 79 WAR, nine more WAR than Rolen and that took him about 2800 more PA's to get to.

So the question is Does Robinson get to be an all time great for the glove alone? Or does playing in a league with barely a good 3rd baseman for 15 years plus weigh in on that too?

Many think that the small hall would exclude Brooks too.

I'm not going to get into WAR because I think it's partial BS. I think players these days know what certain approaches to take to run the number up while before WAR, players approached for more general stats.

With that aside, Brooks would never get in on his batting. However, not being an AL fan, I saw very little of him. And if his glove was close, game in and game out as he was during that 1970 World Series, he deserves in with a .000 batting average lol

If Mike Schmidt's your bar, then there should be exactly one 3B in the HOF - Mike Schmidt. Rolen's one of the 10 best ever to play the position - https://www.baseball-reference.com/l.../jaws_3B.shtml.

I can't imagine he'll pick a Reds cap. Will he go blank? Phillies? Cards?

    Re: Rolen to HOF

Rolen had a great combination of bat and glove. He's clearly one of the top 3B of his era and fully deserves to be in the HOF.

If you're a "small HOF" guy, I don't understand how you could have Robinson in or put him in the same sentence as Schmidt. He's in almost entirely because of his glove.
