You're right. Brooks got into the HOF for his fielding, but because most of what I saw of him was the 1970 world series, everybody else is overrating his fielding wizardry.
Oh, how's this? The Reds played in 8 playoff games with Scott Rolen on the roster and his errors had a direct effect on 2 of the 6 losses. Yeah, that kind of sticks out when you're a Reds fan who hasn't seen a lot of playoffs since 70s.

Rolen, a force at 3B, gets call to Hall of Fame
https://www.mlb.com/reds/news/scott-...o-hall-of-fameRolen was a second-round pick by the Phillies in the 1993 MLB Draft. At the age of 21, he made his big league debut with the Phillies on Aug.1, 1996 -- against one of his future clubs, the Cardinals -- and went 1-for-4.
"The highlight of my Hall of Fame career was the first day I got called up in the Major Leagues and I watched my parents walk into the stadium," Rolen said. "I choked up on the field and had a hard time finishing the inning."
One of Philadelphia's key producers, Rolen reached his first All-Star Game in 2002, a season in which he hit 31 homers.
But 2002 also proved to be his swan song with the Phillies; after informing the front office that he would not re-sign upon reaching free agency after the season, Rolen was traded to the Cardinals on July 29, 2002, for pitchers Mike Timlin and Bud Smith and infielder Placido Polanco.
“They taught me how to play the game. My six years in Philadelphia, I wouldn’t trade for anything in the world," Rolen said. "It taught me who I was as a player and what I was going to do for them, how I was going to work no matter where I went.”
Viewed as the best defensive third baseman of his era, Rolen was an eight-time National League Gold Glove winner. That is good for fourth most all time among third basemen behind Brooks Robinson (16), Mike Schmidt (10) and Nolan Arenado (10).
“As I got to pro ball, I started watching more of him, and when I was in Colorado, they would tell me, ‘You’ve got to see how he moves his feet.’ They would show me highlights of [Adrian] Beltre, Mike Schmidt and Scott Rolen," said Arenado, the current Cardinals third baseman.
"One thing I admire about Scott Rolen was that he was so big, and you don’t realize how big the man is until you get next to him. To be that good, that agile, move as well as he did and have as good of an arm as he did -- that’s hard to do. I was always impressed with how big he was and how well he moved. I think he’s a Hall of Famer, and he deserves it."

Looks like the HOF is only considering two possible hats for Rolen

I know a lot here don't believe in this kind of stuff. But, I think there was something beyond stats he brought to the Reds. Much like Vaughn in 99, I think Rolen changed the culture of the team.
Not saying that alone turns a loser into a winner. But, when you have a team of young players on the rise like the Reds did in 09 and into 10, I think it can be a huge difference maker.

It’s hard to read about someone experiencing good news, as a fan of the Cincinnati Reds.

Oh yeah, a couple more things.
Brooks 7 times top ten MVP voting with one award. Rolen 1 time top ten MVP voting with zero awards.
And, 3rd base along with all infield positions were more demanding and important back in Brooks' days. Everybody wasn't playing home run derby. Lefties and righties both were taught to swing more level (none of that garbage launch angle crap) and to hit where the pitch dictated which in turn meant much more and harder infield balls.

Rolen changed the culture in Cincinnati. He is now a Hall of Fame, and I don't think you'll find many in Cincinnati who played with him to disagree with that.
Rolen has an extremely dry sense of humor. He could rub some the wrong way if they didn't get the joke. But if you got the joke, he was hilarious.
He could be a tough interview, but his answer would be as good as your question.
I see a lot of parallels with Joey Votto
