Nick Senzel named Reds’ every day centerfielder?

David Bell recently named Nick Senzel the Reds’ starting centerfielder. Senzel hit .231 with 5 home runs in 110 games last year.
It seems that if a player does well, he’s gone. If he stinks, the Reds are stuck with him. It’s a lose-lose situation.

Will Votto and Senzel be healthy for spring camp?
A fractured big left toe forced Senzel to miss the final 14 games of last season. Complications in the healing process required surgery and he was still wearing a boot and using a scooter to get around at Redsfest in December.

“Our doctors said he was making progress,” Krall said. “Where he is exactly, [in terms of] timeline, we’ll know probably when he gets into spring what his tolerance is. I think there’s the healing aspect of it and there’s also the baseball aspect, getting yourself ramped up throughout Spring Training instead of being ready to come to Spring Training.”

Unlike Votto, who will be Cincinnati’s regular first baseman, Senzel was expected to have to compete in camp to retain his role as the center fielder. Bell was scheduled to have a call with Senzel this week.

“I want to hear from him exactly where he is,” Bell said. “I’m hearing good reports. He’s feeling good. I’m planning on him being ready for Opening Day. I still believe -- and Nick Senzel does as well -- that he can play all over the field and be an everyday player, but with where we are as a team, he still factors into center field a lot.

“If something were to change there, I think Nick would be ready to incorporate more positions. Right now, we’re kind of going into the season where we left off. He’s still going to have to play center field, so that would be the focus right now.”

I am not sure of the rule but will Senzel be allowed to use his scooter during the game?

Re: Nick Senzel named Reds’ every day centerfielder

I would not be surprised if Senzel is given the CF job.
The Reds are paying him about 2 million, IIRC.
They aren't going to pay him that much to be a utility player.
Krall is probably hoping he'll play well enough in the first half to rebuild some trade value.. which really isn't a horrible strategy, since he doesn't have money to get a real CF.
[Phil ] Castellini celebrated the team's farm system and noted the team had promising prospects who would one day be great Reds -- and then joke then they'd be ex-Reds, saying "of course we're going to lose them". #SellTheTeamBob

    Thanks for the link.

Interesting... when I read Bell's comments, I took it as they will be transitioning him away from CF and into more of a utility role

Yeah, I read it as Senzel gets a chance to start in CF, but has to produce. If not, he becomes a multi-position utility guy.

I definitely didn't read it as Krall and company giving him the CF job. (Quite the opposite, actually.)

I'd say Senzel's injury history makes this topic...

    A non-starter.

Though, if he's healthy, there is no reason to believe he's not going to be the starting CF'er.

It's not like they brought a bunch of competition into camp for the job.

The shelf life on this decision will last until about the top of the 4th on opening day.
