The White Stripes and Missy Elliott are probably the first two nominees who've done most of their work in the 21st century. The R&RHOF is still busy snubbing the '90s (though way to go Rage and Sheryl Crow).

They've thrown more attention to pop, rap and country acts in recent years. It's never really been the AOR Hall of Fame. They put Joan Baez and Joni Mitchell in there. George Michael is every bit as rock n roll as Ricky Nelson. You can say the same about Kate Bush and Dusty Springfield. Miles Davis, Leonard Cohen and Brenda Lee are all in there.

And they've been snubbing rock acts since forever. We've got a whole thread about it - https://www.redszone.com/forums/show...-Biggest-Snubs. The institution has been late to the party on a whole pile of rock acts. Rolling Stone is infamous for panning acts and records that people now consider pantheon. So this isn't really new.

You're at least ten years early on throwing the entire 21st century under the bus. There's the 2027 class with The Black Keys, LCD Soundsystem, MCR, Maroon 5, Fall Out Boy and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs (wherever those bands fall on your love-hate spectrum). Arcade Fire and Kings of Leon become eligible in 2028. I except a decent chunk of them will eventually gain entry (likely after getting sweated for an unreasonable amount of time). Plus, they haven't yet made the head of every guy of a certain age explode by inducting the Black Eyed Peas. That will happen, soon.

The Strokes, The Killers, Arctic Monkeys, The National, Vampire Weekend. Modest Mouse anyone??? I personally think Jimmy Eat World should be a slam dunk for launching the emo scene into the mainstream. Lots of mid candidates for the early 00s.

I wonder if Spoon's late career splash on the radio gets them in the conversation too. They released great indie album after great indie album for a 10 year stretch there starting with A Series of Sneaks.

My enjoyment wanes with each passing record, but their first album made them the biggest band in England since at least Oasis and maybe The Beatles. It was basically The Strokes but in a very British way. Ever since then they've been maturing and evolving their sound.

And Alex Turner can write pretty

There is a lot of great rock out there Bob, it's just not mainstream, due to the death of radio, Check out bands like, the Detroit Cobras, Midas, BAND-MAID, the Wild Savages, ZZ-VAVA.

I'm gonna push back on the Strokes. I know they've done more than those first two records, but almost nobody has heard it. And that second record was a solid B-. The Killers also tailed off after that first record (though they make the absolute best Christmas songs). The National (new record might be #1), Arctic Monkeys and Spoon (excellent call) have had superior staying power.

I like them. Always have. They're very English. Yet there was a point from the early '00s into the early/mid '10s where England absolutely ruled the roost when it came to the rock music scene.

I see where you are coming from but I am not sure if that is a good analogy. “Rock and roll” is a lot more diverse than jazz with regard to styles. For example I would consider Neil Young rock music while also considering Rage Against the Machine rock. Two sounds that sound nothing alike. Now, I get it, Missy Elliot is rap/r&b and I am unsure if she belongs in the rock and roll HoF. However, I’ve been to the actual RRHOF here in Cleveland and it’s really more about presenting different music to people more than anything. I wasn’t expecting much when I went and I actually thought it was pretty cool. Once I got there I realized I shouldn’t take it very serious and kinda just got “it” while I was there.

Madonna was elected to the RRHOF 15 years ago. It's been very clear for a long time that they've expanded beyond pure rock acts. There are plenty of reasons to object to someone being inducted, for instance Missy Elliott's music is a steaming pile of garbage and the fact that she got in to represent rap/hip hop before Wu-Tang is embarrassing for everyone involved, but the objection that "they're not rock enough" has been rendered null and void for a long time.
