    RIP Gary Rossington

Gary Rossington, last surviving founding member of the Southern rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd dies at the age of 71.

Interesting story about how he came up with the sound for the solo on Free Bird. https://www.guitarplayer.com/lessons...hind-free-bird

I didn't realize there was just one surviving original member left. They were a great band that got cut off way too soon with that terrible plane accident.

To be clinical, that's the drawling guitar on the verse-chorus section. The outro solo is Allen Collins channeling an alien lifeform. Stick those two together and you get something truly iconic.

One underappreciated record from his catalog is the first Rossington Collins album (basically Skynyrd after the plane crash).

    I'm not a system player. I am a system.

I saw Lynyrd Skynyrd at UD Arena in 1977. Never thought of it but I saw them just a few months before their plane crash. Great guitar band and they just killed it that night. I was making up for lost time after getting divorced and took a girl to the show that was a huge Skynrd fan. Lots of crazy ass music, lots of beer and tequila, and just a great show and a wild night.

RIP Gary. You guys were really something

I didn't realize it was a kid, but there was something about those two guys' solos that was just so perfect. I preferred Collins' style, it was almost uplifting compared to Rossington and together they were as in sync as Duane and Dicky to my ears.
