The current roster fits their (low) budget. For minimum dollars they aren’t getting anyone much better. Might as well stick with the guys who’ve been part of the program for ST.

I could see a minor league depth deal for someone.
I’ve always assumed they were going to go with what they had, no matter who else became available.

MLB requires clubs to set aside deferred money as it is earned.

It's usually put into an annuity until the player is due to receive payments.

This allows the team to 1) collect interest and 2) carry the full salary on its books in the year the money is earned.

So old contracts with deferrals generally do not drag down future payrolls, despite memes that appear around Opening Day & payments to Bobby Bonilla. Ken Griffey Jr. is not holding down the Reds 2023 payroll. Baltimore is not robbing Adley Rutschman to pay Chris Davis.

Hunter Strickland is taking PFPs, so looks like he accepted the assignment with Louisville. Having Strickland in the Bats’ bullpen and Chase Anderson in the rotation could pay big dividends for the organization

Officially, I believe it is only Myers and Votto. To make matters worse, the other player in the top 4 is Moustakas....

So basically, two of the Reds four highest paid players don't even play for the team.

The Reds now only have 12 position players on the roster, assuming Votto goes on the IL. I guess this means the Reds found somebody on the waiver wire they like.

Isn't Vosler still in camp as an NRI?

Reds now have 11 healthy position players on the active roster. Vosler will likely be added to make it 12. For the last spot, could be they are adding a player from outside. Or they could re-call someone like Matt Reynolds or Stu Fairchild in-house.

Pitching side is similar with 11 healthy guys on the active roster. Law and Young would seem in line to be added.

Assuming these moves, Reds will need to make room for 3 or 4 players on the forty man roster.

Reds will likely IL seven players before OD, Antone and Dunn (60 day?), Votto, Senzel, Sims, Santillan and Weaver (10-day, presumably).

Strickland was officially released on Saturday morning, so if he's there then he's re-signed to a new minor league deal and he doesn't get a retention bonus.
