    Reds Injury Updates 2023

Tony Santillan, who will begin the season on injured list, is making steady progress after he missed most of last season with a back injury. Santillan threw two “innings” in a live batting practice session last Saturday, drawing positive reviews from hitters Nick Senzel and Matt Reynolds.

Santillan said he was tentatively scheduled to make his debut in spring training games Wednesday.

Luke Weaver (sore forearm) and Lucas Sims (back spasm) are both expected to throw bullpen sessions Wednesday. Weaver is unlikely to be ready for the start of the season because he was shut down from throwing off a mound for about a week. Sims could be ready for Opening Day if he progresses as quickly as hoped.

So I guess Senzel is hitting but not running?

I need a 6-part Netflix documentary about this toe injury.

Tony Santillan is scheduled to pitch in a minor league game today too. That’ll be his first game of the spring.

Nick Senzel is listed as a reserve on today’s travel roster as he looks to make his Cactus League debut

David Bell said Lucas Sims (back) and Luke Weaver (forearm) will most likely begin the year on the IL.

They're both throwing bullpens today and ramping up, but it's a timing issue.

NIck Senzel will make his 2023 Cactus League debut tonight, David Bell said.

He'll likely stay in AZ after the team leaves and then head to Louisville, where he'll play CF, 3B and maybe even 2B

Senzel is Pinder's replacement if he's ever healthy.

Hopefully, Pinder's minor league contract doesn't award him some crazy 3M$ sum if purchased.

The reds have 17 or 18 position players more deserving than Nick Senzel. His existence on this roster is appalling.

Weaver isn’t expected to pitch on opening day, so that news isn’t the real issue. It would be nice if the beat writers would ask the more important question: “will Weaver be available for his first start if he were the 5th starter?” That start would be on April 5th.

The answer is no. Sheldon’s tweet says Sims and Weaver will likely pitch in Louisville (rehab) after the season begins.

Sims and Weaver have each thrown about 5 innings in game action this spring, they’re basically going to need to start spring training over again. No need to rush them in another lost season.

Like the Italians were reserves for the Germans in WWII.

    Re: Reds Injury Updates 2023

I have beaten the Nick Senzel roster status thing to a pulp so often I qualify for a protection order. But... one last time.

.240 .303 .360 .663 in 1036PA's through his age 27 season. He's a bad defender in the OF. His injury history is well known. He offers "positional flexibility" in the same sense that if a power hitter doesn't hit for power, who gives a crap.

.211 .285 .434 .719 in 762 PA's got Aquino sent to Asia to play ball. He's a superior defender with an 80 arm. He has legit power, and a non chronic injury history. But to be fair he got hurt a bunch too.

I'm sure there are a number of baseball reasons to keep Senzel over Aquino. Maybe there are legit behind the scenes reasons.

But looking at his game log coupled with his DL stints for 2022 and you see a very clear story of a guy that stunk and was likely hurt to start the season, returned from the DL in the last week of May until mid June and hit .283 .297 .500 .797. Returned in August, hit like crap: .198 .253 .259 .512. then in September .224 .290 .506 .796

Are these great numbers? Of course not. But, Nick Senzel was given 150 more PA's to show he's objectively worse at baseball in almost every facet.

The Reds drafted Senzel in the first round. So, extra rope. And maybe there are additional reasons. Who knows?

BTW, Aquino is the biggest guy on the Chunichi Dragons, and averages 7 inches taller than almost every other player. But I digress.

Senzel's high water mark in MLB was 2019. Not a great year but it showed his talent. It also continued to show he simply cannot stay healthy. As a pro, his peak was MILB. In the 4 levels after Rookie ball he OPS'd .982, .847, .973 and .811. He never topped 300 PA's at any MILB level. He's always hurt.

Aquino was at least interesting. Senzel is injury prone Drew Stubbs lite.

And with that, I bid my Senzel bashing adieu. It, like him as a potential key player for the Reds, is something I no longer find amusing.

Drew Stubbs was a better player than Nick Senzel. (He was miscast as a leadoff hitter, though.)

Senzel is more like Paul Householder, Part Deux.
